This is the third edition of what is considered the standard textbook on Tudor and Stuart Britain. A great deal of research has been done on this period since the second edition was published, and this third edition is fully updated to take account of all the recent developments in the area.

Roger Lockyer looks at the major themes of politics and religion and shows how the Tudors re-established a strong monarchy, building on foundations laid by their Yorkist predecessors. The accession of the Stuarts brought new strains as well as intensifying old ones, and the middle years of the seventeenth century saw the collapse of the monarchy and the temporary establishment of a republic in England. The book gives a clear view of the complex issues involved and an insight into their enduring popular interest.

In addition to detailed coverage of the main political and religious issues, this new edition contains expanded coverage of Ireland and Scotland and also of economic and social topics, including trade and industry, the structure of society, the treatment of the poor, and the role of women.

Roger Lockyer has been both a schoolteacher and a university lecturer, having spent the greater part of his life teaching at Royal Holloway, University of London. His previous publications include The Early Stuarts: A Political History of England, 1603-1642, and James VI and Tudor Britain, 1485-1603, with Dan O¿Sullivan. He is also the author of a major biography: George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628).

Engaging and perceptive

This is history the way it should be written. Clear and engaging narrative prose delivered with sound judgment and insight. This is essentially a text book, but one that makes me wish that I had been given such texts when I was in school. Although the book was obviously written for the layman and student, it is just as obviously a work by a scholar who knows his subject area inside out, and delights in getting it right.

Fantastic book

This is a very well written history textbook. It does have the author's opinions and point of view, but that's no different than other historical texts. There are no maps or graphics, only text. I would recommend.

About the Author

A transmission engineer, Count Hans Christopher Seherr-Thoss had the inclination to write Universal Joints and Driveshafts in 1980, when he realized the need for an effective textbook on machine elements. But only in 1988 did he actually form the writing team and find the publisher Springer, which released the English-language first edition in 1992. Count Seherr-Thoss, whose long writing career began more than 50 years earlier in newspapers, has authored works on technical subjects since 1948 and published his first Springer book, on gears, in 1965. He resides near Munich, Germany, and maintains an archive, founded in 1936 in Breslau, which specializes in technological, economical and related biographical works.

Informative yet poorly elaborated

First of all, I am mostly interested in innovative constant velocity shaft design, and I have developed my own way of thinking (geometrically) and computation (efficiently) over the years.

From where I stand, the book is quite informative on traditional (rolling bodies and tracks design) CV joints: it contains all the important historical inventions you need to know...stress analysis and design take up half space...tons of data and facts about practical designs.

However I find that the text is poorly elaborated. For example, many figures, which are key to understanding the whole idea of CV joints, are inconsistently drawn and poorly explained. One simply needs tons of time to figure out what the figures are all about from the equations (conceivably full of trigonometries), which is never a good idea in the first place. Although the book is only 300 pages, it may take twice the amount of time to finish than some smoothly written 700-800 pages (I know quite a few such books!). I doubt that anyone will adopt it as a textbook.

Considering the book being written around 1988, the bulk of knowledge is rather old (if not obsolete), and pays little attention to innovative linkage based CV joints/driveshafts design. In fact, theory of linkage based CV joint is developed as early as 1973 (K.H. Hunt). In practice, many innovative designs are already seen in such CV joints as Koenigs and Thompson CV joint. It would be a good idea to consider analysis and design (in terms of both mechanics and kinematics) of such CV joints in modern CV joint textbooks.

Dryzek does a good job of synthesis in this book, and provides useful ontologies for identifying and contrasting various discourses. The book is written at an intermediate level of academic depth and is an easy read. As good as any academic book on the topic I have found.

Tells a different side than the popular culture. Many facts that are omitted in other books. Very interesting. Hard to believe in the innocence of the young men who were accused after reading this. Left conflicted after reading; and maybe that's a good thing; stepping outside the confines of conventional wisdom.

Just a collection of transcripts I can find online

The guy has just collected 500 pages of copied interviews, newspaper articles, quotes and dialogue. There's very little analysis or actual writing. He tacks on some stuff about satanism toward the end which just comes off as the writings of a child scared of the boogeyman. I believe the accused are guilty. But this book is a big disappointment. If I want to read case notes, police reports, interviews and newspaper articles, I'll just go find them online. Where is the analysis? Where's the synthesis? What's the point?

I've followed this crime through documentaries and books written of the events. my biggest issue with this book is in the hypocrisy the author has. he continuously condemns others of being biased,however he is guilty too.

This book was the key I had been looking for in reaching a mid-40's spiritual plateau. It is a book of answers and methods. From things as simple as focussing on the thoughts "In" and "Out" while breathing during meditation to the conflict between egoism and spiritualism. It is the kind of book one will keep on hand in times of crises to read over again. The format of brief 4-5 page essays is perfect for those with short attention spans.

A Gathering of "Old Friends" Opening New Windows in Our Search for God

Joseph Campbell said it well - and says it again in this new collection: "An intense experience of mystery is what one has to regard as the ultimate religious experience."

If that's where you are in your own spiritual journey - then this book is for you.

"Handbook for the Spirit" is a Who's Who of "old friends" in the spiritual field - too many names to list here. But the co-editors Dr. Richard Carlson and Dr. Benjamin Shield are old hands at sharing insights into the healing and happiness that can surprise us in our spiritual journeys. They've collected here some new, and some old, thoughts specifically about a person's relationship to the divine - to God or to other higher realms of spiritual truth.

What I love about this particular collection is that, while it does share some speculative approaches to spirituality, the community of voices here also is rooted in traditional faiths as well.

So, for example, we've got a great piece here by Sue Bender, author of the memoir, "Plain and Simple," about life among the Amish. Writing with her characteristic clarity, she gives us an 8-page reflection on what she's learned from the Amish -- and from her experience of writing about the Amish.

Rabbi Harold Kushner appears in this collection, too. For so many readers, his voice is like an old friend returning to share a few thoughts. As in most of these inspirational pieces, there's nothing here that's stunningly new to longtime readers. But it's like coming to a family reunion in which Kushner leans back and reminds us of various things, including the importance of Martin Buber's teachings.

And, every now and then, there's a flash of awareness, for example: I enjoyed finding, toward the end of Kushner's chapter, this little gem: "When people ask me, `Where is God?' I tell them I would rather rephrase the question to, `When is God?'" Now, truth be told, I've heard this great question from a number of rabbis through the years. It's a brilliant reframing of our windows toward God. Nevertheless, as I finished Kushner's chapter, seeing the question afresh in that context - was like a little ray of light.

That's how the very best "readers" in this genre are supposed to work. A huge "Bravo!" to Shield and Carlson and the whole circle of old friends who assembled this wonderful little gift.

Wonderful and spiritually uplifting book

I loved "For the Love of God" and, as the title claims, it is a "handbook for the Spirit". The essays range from Mother Teresa to the Dalai Lama, so as credentials go, it doesn't get better. This book works on the level of poetry - food for the soul. The only comparable book I can think of that achieves this same level of impact, is the divine and truly inspired "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard G. Patton. The accumulated wisdom that is in "For the Love of God" becomes manifest in the profoundly moving "The Autobiography.." and for the first time I can believe Jesus as being a REAL human being. Either I am getting older or the authors of today are getting better at portaying our aspirations towards God. - I hope it's just them getting better. This is an excellent book, go for it!

About the Author
Graham Oppy is Professor of Philosophy at Monash University, where he has recently been Head of the School of Philosophy and Bioethics, and Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Arts. His publications in philosophy of religion include Ontological Arguments and Belief in God (1996), Philosophical Perspectives on Infinity (2006), and Arguing about Gods (2006) and numerous journal articles.

Michael Scott is lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Manchester and editor of Ars Disputandi, an online journal in philosophy of religion. He has written several papers in philosophy of religion and perception and co-authored Realism and Religion (2007) with Andrew Moore.

My copy of the book, has missing pages....WTF

Other than that the material is excellent. There are readings that you do not normally find in other Philosophy of Religion texts.
