Brief but Good

This economical book provides a good foundation to get one started in DIY tube amplifiers. One thing I particularly liked about the book were the detailed construction tips, e.g. the proper placement of lock washers on chassis mounted components, grounding techniques, etc. These types of things are often glossed over or not well covered in other sources.

An Adventure in Exploring the Appeal of Tube Sound

With the resurgence of interest in vacuum tube audio amplifiers among audio purists, Vacuum Tube Amplfier Basics is right on target. Although it reviews basic electronics theory and terms before launching into describing practical circuits that the reader can build, readers with no prior electronics knowledge need not be intimidated. The theory is presented in a simplified and logical way that will be useful for newbies through experienced electronics techs. For readers who wish to do so, the book gives clear intsructions for building high quality tube circuits that can be combined to yield a fully functional vacuum tube stereo system that you can brag about having built yourself. What an adventure! It also suggests compatible speakers and explains the fabled "tube sound". A previous reviewer mentioned that the diagrams were hard to read on the Kindle version. This is easily remedied by viewing the book on Kindle's free PC ap where you can have the diagrams a big as you like.

Perfect if you are aware of what you are getting

I have experience building solid state amplifiers, and I was looking for a way to tackle my first tubes project. This book provided me exactly what I needed. But please be aware regarding the following:
- It is not very good as an electronics primer. Look somewhere else if you don't know what a resistor/cap/pot/transistor is.
- The chapters are somewhat erratic in their sequence.

That said, there is plenty of valuable info explained in a very friendly manner.

I'm still looking for a good phrasebook...

Two big complaints:
(1) The author invented his own method of phonetic annotation. The non-standard phonetics are not well-done, and create undue complexity when sussing out the pronunciations. I find myself referring back to the somewhat-helpful pronunciation guide often - even for words I know how to pronounce, because the phonetic notation has me second-guessing myself. Also, the vowel pronunciation cues are unhelpful for some American regional dialects (e.g. if "pen" and "pin" sound the same). Using IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) would have been a better choice, because those sounds are well-established standards.

(2) The book is visually cluttered and disorganized. The text is crushed between huge top & bottom margins. The phrases, translations and phonetics often break into the next column or page. It lacks guide headings to ease navigation, and the two-column newspaper layout adds to the textual chaos.

I'm sure the book is a valuable study guide, but it is ill-suited for quick reference. I use phrasebooks for reminders and to keep me focused (I tend to creolize similar languages, if I stop paying attention or start speaking too quickly). For me, phrasebooks are a crutch in on-the-go situations, but this book gives me little to lean on.

La primera mitad del libro tiene su gracia y atrapa, pero posteriormente como que la historia no amarra y es poco verosímil. Aparte de esto, la edición para Kindle, que fue la que leí, tiene muchos errores de edición como puntuación en lugares equivocados y párrafos duplicados que entorpecen la lectura. El trabajo de edición haría la lectura cómoda, mas me temo que no podría recomendar el texto.

La narración no aporta riqueza literaria, sólo cuenta lo que pasa, parece un argumento cinematográfico. Incluso usa una palabra de manera incorrecta, no voy a decir cual. Dudo que el narrador sea español, como pusieron en un comentario.

This brilliant reprint of some 20 texts of various length, which the editors introduce, providing a "context" for the "pamphlet wars" of the Tudor and Jacobean eras, seems particularly relevant after 400 years. The writing is, however,considerably better than what we may find in our own broadsheets. Most notorious at the time (1620s) were two pamphlets, known as "Hic Mulier" which gave rise to a response entitled "Haec Vir." The manly woman answers the womanish man.
