Mary H. Kingsley (1862-1900) was an English writer and explorer who, in 1893, set out to complete the work of her father in the study of sacrificial rites and fetishes. Although she was trained as a nurse, most people at the time were shocked that a single, unaffiliated woman would brave such dangerous expeditions. After a second trip to Africa, Kingsley published her first major work, "Travels in West Africa" (1897). The book was an immediate best-seller, and popular for its honest and realistic depiction of life as a native African and British imperialistic influence. Kingsley's works drew attention to native religion and law in West Africa, prompting the formation of activist groups after the author's sudden death from Typhoid on her third trip to Africa.

Early feminist adventuress an inspiring role model

Mary Kingsley's clear-eyed scientific and empirical descriptions of her early travels to West Africa are awe-inspiring and beyond fascinating. But what overshadowed all her informative descriptions of life and culture in West Africa in the late 1800's was her fearless spirit and exceptional bravery. I just cannot imagine doing what she did even if I had today's modern resources to rely on. Her dry humor is evident in her commentary and I was rarely bored even when she described the local flora in depth.

The dictionary itself easily deserves 5 stars. I can't believe the 1828 dictionary isn't a household name. A sign of the times, I suppose.

This Kindle edition seems like it was put together well but for some reason the search index, when used with my Kindle Paperwhite, doesn't work. It does work using Amazon's desktop app but I do most of my digital reading on my Kindle so this ebook is, at the moment, somewhat useless to me.

I did speak with the publisher and he was good enough to promise to make efforts to see if the problem is unique to my own device or if it applies to all Paperwhites and act accordingly. I will report with any updates.

One thing that I REALLY wanted was an Integrable dictionary that works with the Kindle and so decided to ask the publisher about this. He explained he too wanted to do this but Amazon doesn't allow for anyone to create integrated dictionaries for the Kindle.

I rattled my brain thinking how I might be able to find enough people who would love to have Noah's 1828 dictionary used in much of their Kindle reading and, perhaps, to petition Amazon to reevaluate this policy and allow alternate dictionaries used for their e-reader.

After giving it much thought I realized it would be wiser and more efficient if I let the readers come to me and voice with their fingers.

If you want to see an Integrated 1828 dictionary for the Kindle then PLEASE "like" this review and let Amazon know that you want them to allow users to choose which dictionary they prefer. While I think their should be certain standards for what is considered an acceptable dictionary, Noah's 1828 dictionary more than qualifies and puts modern dictionaries to shame.

Please, Amazon representatives, do the right thing and let it happen and put Noah Webster's masterpiece in the prominent place where it belongs. The Kindle is a wonderful device and it can only be made more wonderful by integrating it with the greatest dictionary of the English language ever published.

Still enjoying this series

I have really enjoyed this series and this 5th book was no exception. I loved the premise of the boss and his prim assistant getting together. There wasn't any conflict between these too but there are other dramas to deal with. I don't think it's fair to give spoilers because anyone reading this review is most probably a fan of this series.

Beautiful. Compelling. Emotional. Loving. There are more adjectives that I'm sure give a better and more fitting description, but I just loved this book. The Southerlands are a family that I have enjoyed reading about. I will tell you up front that you can probably read the book as a stand alone, but I don't think that you will get the same feeling if you haven't read the other books. Blake Southerland has been in England building his fortune. He has an assistant, Samantha, whom he is finding a bit attractive. She feels the same way. A family emergency sends Blake back to Virginia. Needing to finish some business, Samantha travels with Blake. Blake is from a big, boisterous family. Samantha is an only child. She comes off a bit cold, but it is not her intention to be that way. I can only imagine how intimidated Samantha must have felt meeting Blake's huge family. I loved the way that Blake defended Samantha when his brother, Adam acted like an @$$ to her. This was a simple love story without exes and outside influences causing grief or heartache to their relationship. I love that we as readers just get to watch their story fall into place. There is a dual point of view. There is one chapter in which we get John, Blake's dad's point of view. That just made me happy cry. Then as I kept reading that happy cry turned into an ugly cry. I don't want to ruin the story so I will stop there. No cliffhanger, but we know that Taylor's, Blake's sister, story is next. From the blurb it sounds a bit more angsty that this one.

My Fave in this series!

Well I am a huge fan of this authors. I have never read any of her stories I did not love. This series is a huge favorite of mine and I have read all the previous books. It can stand alone but without rreading the other stories you might get lost on who is with and married to who because the Southlands are one big family.

That said I had to pace myself because this story was crazy good. I have loved every book in the series but this one was just super romantic.Blake is the Southland brother we have known the least because he lives and works in England. Her has an assistant, Samantha who is british and they both have the hots for each other. Blake was so sweet in trying to fight the feelings and when he gives in the attraction it was so fun.

While this is super light hearted and fun, Blake does come home for a reason and I know he is not reason but I was glad he stuck around to spend time with his family. I loved seeing all the couples from other stories play a big part of things in this story. I truly loved this story but I really didn't like something that happened in this story. I m not sure why it happened or how it became a big part of the story. Maybe it had a bigger purpose than I saw and that will be reflected in future stories.

Probably the best book out there

Solid. Probably the best book out there.

It won't get super detailed and can sometimes be too simple. Probably M3/M4 or early residency level.

Probably not as good as Pocket Med but better than the other pocket books from this series (as a note, pocket primary care is also very good and covers PC complaints better than this book). This is pure EM.

Excellent book though. I'm being critical here - it's probably the best EM book for the levels I talked about. It's all bullets so you kind of need to know what you're reading about to make sense of it. It's not a primary learning source. It's to jog your memory. Bullets.

Helpful for PA Emergency Medicine Rotation

This was an excellent reference for my Emergency Medicine rotation. I was able to quickly get the information I needed based on the chief complaint including important historical information, differential diagnosis, and recommended labs/imaging. There is also a small section on pediatric emergencies and common chief complaints which was helpful since I have limited experience with pediatrics.

About the Author

Jasper Morrison was born in 1959. He studied at the Kingston Polytechnic Design School and the Royal College of Art in London, and since 1986 has run his Office for Design in London, with a branch in Paris. He has worked for, among others, Alessi, Canon, Rosenthal, Rowenta, Sony, Vitra International, Samsung Electronics, Muji, and Olivetti.

Best show at Salone del Mobile 2007 in Milan

This book is a gem. It is beautifully designed and the show was the most interesting in the whole Salone in 2007.
It is a tribute to some of the objects that make our life better without screaming out loud. There are about 200 objects created by various well-known designers and not. The objects are mostly European and Japanese and were selected by Morrison and Fukasawa.

Waste of $25: Poor Photography, Non-Existent Reasoning and Lack of Explanations

This book is a useless visual walkthrough of the author's design gallery. Here are my reasons for the 1 star review.

1) The photos of each product were not taking specifically for this book, so in some cases, you don't see any detail of the product they are talking about! It seems as though the photos were taken at their exhibit, and reused for the book. Many of the photos are of multiple products grouped together (as they were in their gallery/exhibition), and are out of focus. How are we supposed to learn from the product design if we can't actually see the product?

2) The products that they deem "super normal" have seemingly zero reasoning or research behind them. With explanations like: "A table, looking like what anyone might draw - four legs, one at each corner, straight and square and nothing unexpected except the thinness of the top, which defies our expectations of what would be strong enough to do the job. So the table becomes a live presence in a way that other tables do not. A high performance super-table." I have no idea why it is super normal.
What other tables were considered? How does this table specifically improve on other past tables? There is absolutely no reasoning here. With descriptions like that - one cannot learn anything about the "super normal" philosophy.

I cannot believe that the authors, who believe in quality, fine detail, and utility would publish this. It is one of the most useless books i've ever read due to its lack of quality photography, reasoning and explanation.

While the topic / design theory may sound interesting, you're better off reading about the topic online than paying 25 dollars for this book.
