Sweet - and sexy with some good sexual tension!

I'm a fan of capture/slave type stories - which I usually enjoy if they are harsh and non consensual. I just like the rough stuff.

Here we have a very sweet story with no harshness whatsoever. It's got two MC's who are very likable and who you can believe an HEA for - and no truly real bad guys. Stephen's pack could be considered less then ideal - but there is no true villain. Daryl and his pack seemed like pretty upstanding wolves in general. Because this is so short there is not really any time to delve into much of anything as far as backstory of the packs or how they really work with each other. Since this is book one I'm assuming that we'll get more evolution as the series continues but this needed another 40 pages or so of expounded discovery for the reader on the packs, pack law, the world itself, and some sense for how the society really works within the packs. This is really noticeable with Daryl's packs once they arrive since you know next to nothing about them other then their location. Since it's a shifter story the insta mate is fine - and the sex is hot and not overly done. I enjoyed the world, would like to know much more about it, and will definitely pick up the next one's in the series. The length here is too short - but what is here is balanced very well in terms of the two MC's themselves.

It was an okay read, and I will continue the series

Even though I thought the book was relatively good, there were a few ehh moments for me. Considering the blurb, I was kinda hoping for a bit more of a dub-con type of read, but it wasn't dub-con at all. It was way too fluffy for the blurb, very misleading. Still, once I allowed myself to understand this wouldn't be a sit-on-the-edge-of-my-seat-OMG story, I settled down for the light read it turned out to be.

I wish a little more of the sex was on page. Not because I'm a sex whore (even though I do love reading these books so I really can't say I'm not), but I hated reading their initial sex scene then jumping a few days later and being told they'd done it in every position imaginable. Give me a little less tell and some more show. Especially since it comes back up in the plot. And I got confused - can you choose to knot or not to knot? And do you have to knot in order to impregnate your partner? It just really needed to be expanded on to be a really good story, instead of just a relatively good one.

I loved the alpha at the end, well played, and I will be tuning in for the next one in this series.

Loved it!

Such a sweet and heart warming story. Poor Stephen being an omega meant a life of waiting to be sold off and taken from the only homes he's ever known. It was sad reading the hardships of his life and that of other omegas. But the story doesn't end there! A savior rescues Stephen. Daryl was slapped with a shock he never expected but sometimes the best things in life happen that way. I loved this story and plan on checking out this author's other work. Well done!

Field guide for coin identification

This is a useful refrence when identification of coinage is needed , what was not included were any of the paper bank notes or government issued bills one would think of in terms of cash ? Never the less , the information contained within is very useful and will serve as a guide to identifying what would otherwise be a time consuming task in comparing . Would recommend for coins ID

Good, but not replacement for Schjoth!

This is a welcome addition to the Chinese cash collector's library. However, it is not as comprehensive, well organized or coherent as I hoped it would be. There are quite a few typos(especially concerning the catalog numbers) that I noticed after just a few minutes of browsing through the book. There are omissions, oddly enough, of some of the more common coins Schjoth listed, and a few of the the illustrations (although rubbings, which is good) tend to be a little "hazy". The layout of the book is somewhat confusing, and I don't think it will be an easy book for a "brand new collector" to use. There is no true "index" per se,and the section on identifying counterfeits is not all that helpful. The emphasis seems to be more on the rare and seldom seen coins, which I suppose is OK, but the beginner will have to do alot of "wading" through illustrations to identify what he has(if indeed his coin is listed). One item that I consider a MAJOR defect is this: There is no mention whatsoever(that I saw) in the entire book, concerning the fact that the countries of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam[Annam] also issued cash coins of similar appearance. This could be a potential major stumbling block for a beginning collector who has(for instance) come across a common Kanei Tsuho Japanese cash coin or similar item, and cannot find any illustration or mention of it. (One of the things I like so much about Schjoth's book is the fact that he tried to list most of the more commonly encountered coins from the "other" oriental cash-issuing countries.) Over all, this is certainly worth the money, and it contains quite a lot of information that is not in the other books, but it is not the new "Chinese Cash standard reference" that I think some of us collectors were hoping for after reading the advance reviews.

A companion volume, not the state-of-the-art

David Jen, an American citizen who spent much of the 20th century living in China, is a volunteer assistant at the American Numsimatics Society, the world's leading insitute for the study and conservation of coins. As a paid employee of the ANS, I would like to stress that the ANS does not endorse this work directly, and the following are my own opinions.
Many collectors have primarily worked from one of four works in Western languages: the catalog of Terrien de Lacouperie, F. Schjoth, the George Fisher translation of the Ding Fubao collection, or the Arthur Coole series. Although there is much merit in all of these works, very few of them work with the economic history of China and are far more concerned with the aesthetics of the coins they collect. Primarily interest has centered on the spade and knife coinages during the Zhou period. Jen's work instead concentrates on coins that have a primary place within the economy, and key variants upon those coins. It is a much smaller catalog than the 6-volume Coole, which cannot be used easily, and I do not believe Mr Jen attempted to supplant the Ding Fubao or Schjoth catalogs.
However, I am distressed that none of the readers have noted that there are fine catalogs now in the Chinese and Japanese languages, which are truly most important. The 12-volume Daxi catalog, published by the Shanghai Museum, is the standard reference work for Asian numismatists, which far supplants the Ding Fubao or Schjoth. In addition, it appears that French is no longer a reference language for numismatists, because the fine work of Francois Thierry of the Bibliotheque National is completely omitted in reviews.
David Jen's book is a nice update to the Schjoth and "Fisher's Ding" catalogs for those who only read English, but anyone serious about Chinese coinage must read Chinese, and will instead use the Daxi. Thierry's many researches are important, and as his catalogs tend to represent hoards, are important for their economic significance. In sum, for the collector who only speaks English, this is a good supplement to the Schjoth and Fisher's Ding. In that sense it is an important addition to any numismatic library, but it does not supplant these earlier texts, nor do I think it was intended to do so. Serious scholars of Chinese numsimatic history may wish to use it for its variants of some Chinese coins, but their research is likely to be more profitable in working with the standard catalogs instead...

The small interview with Steve Cohen is worth the price of this book

This is a nice book about the hedge fund industry. However, what I, a small/indie stock trader and an author myself, liked the most about this book is the small interview with Steve Cohen, the founder of SAC Capital. Steve Cohen has had a major influence on my stock trading philosophy in my beginning years, and I consider him one of the great stock market operators of all time, dispite all the bad media around him, together with Jesse Livermore, Bernard Baruch, Gerald Loeb, Nicolas Darvas, William O'Neil, and Edward Lampert. So, only this small interview with Steve Cohen is already worth the price of the book, as Steve Cohen has given only a very few interviews in his life, and I picked up a few stock market tips of Steve Cohen from this small interview like:

* It is an information business and the only way to succeed is to pay attention to what is going on;
* We don't get married to positions. If things are not working out the way we had hoped, we get out;
* We might be IBM for a number of reasons like the computer sector is strong or the analysts have good expectations;
* Nothing stays the same in this business. You have to constantly adapt and evolve and learn what the new game is and then play accordingly;
* There are more trading opportunities when the markets get a little more volatile;
* This can be an all-consuming job, but it is fun. Everyday there is something new. It is a game. It is like playing a sport everyday.

For the rest part, the book is perhaps more relevant to people who are seriously considering going into the hedge fund business or are just curious about the hedge fund industry: its history, statistics, regulations, etc. However, I also liked the the stories about the unforgiving nature of the markets and how even the brightest minds in the industry like Long Term Capital, Soros, Tiger, Lehman, Bear Stearns, Niederhoffer, etc. have done mistakes and suffered big losses. There were also a few nice insights from/about Jim Rogers, Soros, Steinhardt, Vinik, Wyser-Pratte and other hedge fund managers, and of course Alfred Jones, the founder of the hedge fund industry.

I also liked the author's idea that to be a successful trader one needs to have drive/ambition, self-confidence and humor. As to me, I think there are about 10 things in trading that seprate the best from the rest:

* Passion
* Understanding of psychology
* Focus
* Hard work
* Unique stock trading plan and independent research
* Zen-like simplicity
* Open-minded flexibility
* Patience and timing
* Discipline
* Risk management and courage to take risks
* A little luck

Non quantitative guide to starting, running, investing in hedge funds

This well written informative book opened my eyes to many aspects of the hedge fund industry, but suffers from some huge omissions. It goes back to how the fund industry was started in 1940s by Alfred Winslow Jones and examines Jone's philosophy. There's interesting anecdotal histories of fund managers like Goldstein, Robertson, Meriwether, Niederhoffer, Vinik, and others, as well as investors George Soros and John Paulson. The book seems ambivalent about ease of starting a hedge fund saying first that little is requirements for starting, but each anecdote of leading managers recounts complaining of difficulty in starting operation.

There is no help on any quantitative aspects of hedging. There's no mention of software apps, not even whether they are supplied by a brokerage house. In the section on hedge fund investing we see the bizarre statement that there is no science to hedge funds, nor to any investment. In fact there's a great deal of science applied. The hedge fund arena appears to be full of "quants." Especially interesting is the case of LTCM. It's recounted by Strachman with no mention of the Black-Scholes method or if it was a factor in the failure of LTCM, or whether it is applied again now that LTCM has recovered from the letdown. Of course science doesn't always work, but ignoring it entirely is a very large omission in this analysis.

The author's emphasis on the need for investor due diligence appears overly optimistic.
Investors do not have the necessary resources for due diligence. Bernie Madoff was honest enough before things got bad and he started cheating progressively more and more. An ordinary Investor would have to be a mind reader to predict who will turn into a swindler. Madoff as well as other fund managers are good at camouflaging results. My understanding is that it was a very experienced examiner who detected anomalies and he was ignored for a long time by the SEC.

I enjoyed the book and took several good points out of it. Readers expecting a detailed rundown of how to start and operate a hedge fund will be disappointed, but readers looking for an explanation of the hedge fund industry, some history and considerations for investing and structuring a fund may find value here.

As usual a great suspense and romance in this latest SSI book

I am a SSI junkie. I’ve loved this series from the start. What are you going to get in a SSI book – plenty of action, very bad guys who do despicable things but you know will get their punishment, and a sexy alpha male that knows how to pleasure a woman.

The lovable but deadly Ukrainian Vanko Petriv finally gets his book. Vanko may be tough on the outside but he really wants a woman of his own to love. When he’s assigned to go get a woman who can finally identify the DOD traitor that has been trying to kill them since the first book he knows right away this is his woman.

Elana is from Russia but placed in the United States with a new identity after a sick Russian Mafia head killed her parents and sexually assaulted her due to his fascination with her. She works at a college library when one night she accidentally overhears a man put a hit out on Keely Walsh and the SSI Team. Soon after she has a hit out on her on head and finally manages to get to Vanko where the two of them are not only on the run from the mercenaries that the DOD traitor hired to kill them but also from the Russian who now knows she is alive and will do anything to get her back.

I have to say Ren used to be my favorite but Vanko has now taken top spot. You are never bored in a SSI book and this one was no exception. I did think we were finally going to get a conclusion on the ongoing traitor arc but the author likes throwing in those surprises. Thank you Monette for another great book in the series and I look forward to the next.

Elana Fabrizzio is a Washington DC college librarian who is working the late night shift. The library is all but empty because of the big basketball game, so when Elana goes to gather the books that need to be put back she isn’t expecting to see many people. That is exactly what she finds until she stumbles across a meeting and hears a murder for hire meeting. Now all Elana can think of is to get out of there, alert the police and warn the subject of the murder plot – a woman she heard speak once.

Vanko Petriv is an agent of SSI (Security Specialists International) currently visiting with family in New York when he receives a call to go and find Elana and keep her safe. She is the best chance they have at finding the government spy that has not only threatened SSI’s employees but has also tried to kill the owner’s wife. Vanko is instantly on the job and learns that he might be too late when Elana finds that she has bad guys after her already.

Vanko saves Elana and gets her out of Washington DC but Mother Nature is against them and the weather is horrible. Getting Elana back to SSI headquarters is out for now but Vanko believes he has a solution to keep her safe until the weather is better. However, it seems that the news stories on Elana have alerted an enemy from Elana’s past. Elana’s past is not what it seems and suddenly Vanko and Elana have to keep her safe from more than the government spy. While all this is going on, an instant passion has sprung up between Elana and Vanko that both want the chance explore and they can only do so if they can defeat both threats to Elana.

A chance overheard meeting will bring a librarian and a security contractor together and lead to a lasting love. Elana and Vanko discover that fighting for the chance to love is everything in Weather the Storm. I have wanted Vanko to have his happy ever after since I met him in the very first book in the SSI series. I truly thought that Elana was the perfect match for Vanko and loved just how much they had in common as her story slowly unrolled. I enjoyed watching as they both used every trick they could to have the chance to have that future that was just beyond their reach. I really loved that Elana fought just as hard in her own way as Vanko did to defeat every threat that they faced. I have to say that I flipped the last page closed with a satisfied sigh. Weather the Storm is a thriller with equal amounts of suspense and passion drawn together in the way that only Ms. Monette can to keep you involved and believing that the characters are someone you could meet at any time.

My Thoughts:
Goodreads ate my original long review for this book so I'm having to recreate my thoughts and know that I am going to miss things *sigh*.

I am a fan of romantic suspense thrillers and Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series and J.D. Robb's (Nora Roberts) In Death series are among my favorites. I am definitely going to have to add Monette Michaels to my list of go-to authors when I want a sexy action packed thrill ride. Because let me just say, Weather The Storm was definitely that. High octane and absolutely steamy from beginning to end. All I'm saying is, sexy bathroom scene.

The story opens with Elana Cruz née Fabrizzio, a librarian at Georgetown University, who is settling in for a quiet night at the library. Elana is accompanied by her co-worker Betsy and the security guard Harry. Harry's attention is completely zoned in on his television set as he watched a basketball game between their home school and Purdue. Laughing at his enthusiasm, the ladies decide to make their rounds on a hunt and seek mission to retrieve reference materials hidden by overzealous and industrious students who wanted to ensure their possession of the books. As Elana makes her rounds in the mostly empty library, images of her past flash through her mind. She is not who everyone thinks she is, her past and her story begin in Russia. But a heinous episode by a vile man changes her life forever. Elana's uncles ensure her safety by ensconcing her in the United States with a new identity and profession. Shaking off the dregs of her past, Elana continues her rounds and encounters one of her favorite graduate students Libby who is heavily pregnant, and due any day. She and Libby exchange pleasantries for a bit and Elana makes her way to a study area and then crawls underneath a table in one of the darkest corners of the room. See, Elana knows that students will hide books in the most unique of places and has often found books tapped to the bottoms of desks. As she is making her down-under investigation, she hears voicesdark and ominous voices. Two men are having a brusque conversation. They obviously don't like one another but the details of their conversation of their conversation are clear: murder, espionage, and treason. Elana assumes a still-life position so that the men don't discover her presence. She is almost free and clear. The men disperse but righteous indignation boils in Elana's gut. She will never again allow an innocent to be hurt by a vicious man. She determines to follow, who she labels, the "boss." As the "boss" is leaving his path intersects with Libby's and Elana hears her sharp cry of pain. Propelled into action, Elana places herself in the direct path of the "boss."

Doing the right thing changes the course of Elana's future. She is no longer an unassuming librarian. She is a witness on the run. The "boss" wants her and he sets mercenaries out to eliminate her permanently. Fortunately for Elana, the good guys, in the form of SSI are aware of the "boss" as well. They know that there is a traitor; they just don't know who he is. For the sake of national security, they need Elana to visually identify him. SSI dispatches Vanko Petriv to retrieve Elana and return her safely to their sanctuary in Idaho. Vanko is visiting his sister and her family when he gets the call about Elana. He is immediately intrigued by her "good Russian name" and so is his sister, Tanya. Tanya has a seemingly preternatural ability to glean bits and pieces of the future. She tells Vanko that Elana is HIS. Propelled by her prophecy, Vanko leaves his family and heads directly to Elana.

Once they meet. . .the action really begins!

I know, you probably hate me for not giving more details but trust me you will thank me after you read Weather The Storm. This story was full of twists and turns. I love red herrings and this book had them. Just when I thought I had something figured out, my mouth was left hanging open with a pleasant shock. Michaels definitely spun a tale that keeps the read on the edge of their seats. Up was down, down was up and good and bad blended into an undistinguishable gray.

I love how Vanko and Elana interacted with one another. Sure, he was this big, bad commando but he was sweet, gentle, and solicitous of Elana. He never used his strength against Elana and he made it his mission to gain her trust, which he totally did! And ElanaI adored her character! She had a hard knock life. Brutal. But, her strength and tenacity girded her with a core of steel. She was solid under pressure and bended but did not break. I was totally impressed by her actions at the end of the story. She would definitely ensured that she would never again be a victim. Buh bye Ziv. I also appreciated the integration of the other SSI characters in the story. They were peripheral and important but you did not need to read the other stories in the series to understand what was happening in Weather The Storm.

Michaels is a masterful author and I highly recommend this book and this entire SSI series to anyone who is looking for a romantic thriller with a sexy Ukranian commando. BTW, the Russian endearments...le sigh. Pick up this story today. You will not be disappointed!

Not kid friendly at rimes

The book gives a good perspective on a character often not given lot of importance in Ramayana. But some portions are not kid friendly. The author has used her imaginations and this is more like a historical account, though not fictional has shades of it. I wish the book was kid friendly for elementary and middle school children.

Good portrayal

This book was an excellent read. It shows Urmila as a strong woman with convictions. Perhaps a contrast was needed to show Mandavi as she was portrayed in the book. I was a little disappointed that the exile of Sita after their return when she was pregnant and her being swallowed up by the earth did not merit more than a couple of sentences though. Those would have been prime ground for the author to share her thoughts about those aspects of the story through Urmila's voice.

Well written. Urmila is definitely a heroine whose sacrifices were not given its due.
My issue with the book was that I have been brought up from childhood, hearing and reading the tale of Urmila's sacrifice, when she bids farewell to her husband as a young bride for the sake of her sister and brother in law. She takes laxman's share of sleep, thereby giving the chance to laxman to safe guard Ram and Sita.
In this book, the story itself is different, wherein Urmila looks after the whole family for the 14 years.
The book is enjoyable to read, but since the version clashed with mine, I wasn't convinced.

Each entry offers a definition of the condition and an explanation of associated symptoms, causes and testing techniques. The authors provide treatment options for each problem, including homeopathy, hydrotherapy and "Super Seven Prescriptions" (specific remedies mostly involving dietary supplements). Although some readers may wonder why almost as many pages are devoted to "dizziness" as "cancer," the entries do provide a helpful overview of common therapeutic approaches and include journal references, though it appears only some of the recommendations are supported by published studies. Balch and Stengler review basic alternative therapies, too, such as diet and nutrition, nutritional supplements and traditional Chinese medicine. While they acknowledge that some people will require both conventional and natural treatment, their tendency to equate "natural" with "nontoxic" seems overly simplistic. The basic book that you need in your home

I received this book as a gift from a company who sell me vitamins. It is easy to understand and follow the prescriptions. It describes the treatment for many illness, recomended food, detoxification and also offers alternative cures using aromatherapy, homeopatic and acupressure. I love this book and If were possible I would give it more than five stars.
