Good, but should be better

I originally wrote a review of this book that was somewhat negative. Now that I've had a chance to review the field of works available on this subject, I feel inclined to upgrade my review somewhat.

The work has some decided pluses and minuses. On the plus side, it is probably the most accurate description of spoken Tamil that you will find. This is more of an accolade than it may sound. It is very difficult to pin down what "proper" spoken Tamil consists of, but this book does a better job than anything else in describing Tamil as it is spoken in Chennai.

In fact, it does a bit too thorough a job. Tamil's phonetic system is not simple, and this book does not go out of its way to make it any easier. The new student might be excused at first blush from not believing that what he hears on the CD's is actually the same dialogues he reads in the book; the authors made a point of speaking at a fast clip, like normal Tamil, but it leaves little scope for the learner to get his arms around the pronunciation. There are sound files available online at various websites that are easier for the beginning learner to deal with than the ones designed for this book.

There are other drawbacks to the book that can't be disregarded. Some portions of the grammar are simply not described; the authors apparently don't care to explain what the Tamil infinitive form is and how it differs from the stem - the learner is left to figure that out for him/herself. The types of adjectival endings are not explained in sufficient detail. Worst of all, the vocabulary lists purport to indicate what chapter a word was introduced, and it is wrong in almost every occasion, and in fact a lot of words are used in the lessons that are never explained. This fact tends to pull the rug out for me on whatever virtues the book has.

Despite all this, it is the best bet in town if you want to learn some Tamil on your own. But it won't be easy.

Good book, if you know the language a little

This is probably not the ideal book if you have NEVER heard/attempted spoken tamil before. But, if you are familiar with another Indian/South Indian language and want to learn Tamil, this is a good book. There are several very realistic dialogues with English transations that are used as a teaching aid throughout the book. Personally, I have found the book extremely useful, but I have lived in Chennai for 4 years and I can understand most of it. Thanks to this book, I have been able to talk to my mother-in-law in near-fluent tamil in about 4 weeks. Another problem is there aren't too many other Tamil books out there, so by all means, give this a try. Overall, it is a very well written book.

an enormous challenge

There are so many challenges in studying Tamil that in a book of this size it is necessary to consider certain trade-offs. The spoken language differs considerably from the written, and it is a very difficult language to pin down to a phonetic system. So what we have here is a book that introduces the alphabet, but has little else to do with writing. Another challenge comes from the speed with which Tamilians usually speak their language; the authors have opted for authenticity, which means the speakers are talking very rapidly indeed, to a point where it is even hard to pick out individual words. One solution might be to buy this book along with Kausalya Hart's 'Tamil for Beginners' (audio should be available from Cal-Berkeley, and the author's recording is at a much easier pace to follow). Also, the Hart book teaches the alphabet completely at the beginning and it is used in all of the subsequent lessons.

Still, 'Colloquial Tamil' is a useful book to have, given the very few resources available for Tamil learners. The dialogues get more interesting as the work moves along, and with a lot of practice listening to the accompanying CDs (sold separately), they will become clearer. A language of instant gratification this is not.

Excellent fantasy!

I "stumbled" upon Michael Stackpole's fantasy works beginning with [Talion: Revenant] and was instantly captivated by his storytelling. So far, I've collected most of his fantasy novels and have to say that he maintains a consistent level of excellent writing in all of those works!
I eagerly awaited the publication of [DGW] and finished it over a weekend! The ending is a bit surprising, but I think that makes the novel all the more original. The character development and the maturation process for Tarrant Hawkins is very finely done.
I just finished the follow-up, [Fortress Draconis] last night and have to say that this is one series that I can't wait to read all the way through! And unlike some authors, Mr. Stackpole has already stated that this will be a trilogy ([DGW] is the prequel), so there is a light at the end of this tunnel.
In summary, I highly recommend this novel and all the other fantasy novels by this great author. Although I haven't ventured yet into his sci-fi works, I plan to do so soon and expect the same level of excellent writing!

Had to purchase this again because I gave my copy out. I would give just about anything to see this as a movie. This is 10x better than The Hobbit. This is for grownups. A book you will want to read over & over.

One of my favorite books.

This book is awesome. The first 20 pages or so are a little bit slow and kind of weird if you just took a glance at it. But don't be turned away. You'll soon realize that all the history information on masks and rituals means a great deal to the later story line.
Again, this book is awesome and anyone who likes fantasy books with magic and sword fighting will love it. I really like the way Stackpole describes magick and how it works.
Definitely pick this book up. Don't forget to get Fortress DRaconis, else you'll regret it when you finish this book.

A Bit Disappointing

This book has A LOT of poses but however the only annoyances I have (and sadly it's a BIG one hence why I gave the product only 3 stars), is that the majority of the character poses are FEMALE. Are females really that hard for people to draw? MALES are harder for me as there is so much detail they have in their bodies like in their muscles. Also, what the HELL is with showing the genitals of the females and not the males? Clearly this book was made by a male so the female is VERY defined as you can actually see the figure's v****! If you can show a female character's v**** then, why not show the man's private body part, his penis and testicles? I've noticed in a lot of art books concerning poses the majority of the poses are FEMALE it's AGGRAVATING! Most of us artists (female especially), already know how to do the female body pretty well, it's the MALE body that we have trouble with!

Also, the other reviewer before me talks about some of the poses being too small. That's not an issue for me as I'm accustomed to drawing really small. Some people may have an issue with this but I don't. Also, the book is smaller than a regular art book. Not pocket-sized, but close enough.

All in all, this book is pretty good with poses especially poses from different angles aside from the favoring one sex over the other when it comes to the majority of character poses, and some people might have issues with the picture sizes near the end, (but that's so you can BUY the other books in other series! Another thing to all you comic/manga drawers out there, there are NO MANGA DRAWINGS like the preview shows you so don't be fooled!

I tried to find this book at any library but I couldn't so I eventually gave in and bought it. Despite my slight grievances, I am glad I did finally buy it. It has a lot of interesting poses and the same poses from different angles. I know this book will definitely help me out with posing my characters and I think it will help others out there as well. The price is worth buying but, since it's a small book it should of been $5 instead of $15.

What a great read!

This is one of those books where when I finished reading it, I doubted that anyone could not find something to love about it. The main character is a schmuck much of the time, but the lovable variety that you just want to hug.

This book is witty and has plenty of laugh out loud moments to keep you coming back. I found that when I wasn't reading the book I was thinking about it (always a good sign.)

This may be a book written for men, but as a woman, I got a big kick out of it as well. The plot is different from other books and I think the author really set his main character up for failure in the most spectacular of ways. He made him his own worst enemy, and there is nothing better than a character who causes his own drama.

If you enjoy reading stories that seem more personal narrative than fiction, this will be one that you enjoy.

A very British humorous read!

The wit of the writing is absolutely sublime and made me continuously laugh out loud.

Some writers just have a gift for seeing bizarre characters in an otherwise normal people and bringing them to life, and Edward’s has this gift. A novel based around the author’s own experiences it is heartbreakingly hilarious.

What is different about this book: It is a tale of negotiating a way through relationships told from a man’s perspective, the highs, the lows, the failures and triumphs, the humiliation. This is what makes this book special along with the authors wonderful little illustrations at the beginning of each chapter.

I enjoyed this book very much, it made me laugh, it made me sad, it made me feel anxious and depressed. I love the style of the writing which was straight from the humiliated soul!

So here we have Henry, in the a cottage in the Village of the Damned, a failing actor unable to somehow secure a major role talking or non talking. We first encounter him auditioning for an advert, whereby he is required to drop his trousers and take a 'dump' in a street and somehow fails to get the role.

His life does not get better when he accepts a part time job as a drama teacher at St Gussage’s school, a privately run boarding school for multi national pupils ruled by the mad Piers Halliday, who was undoubtedly my favourite character. As the Headmaster, Piers is a wonderful caricature of a man whose lack of sensibility and political correctness knows no boundaries. He is a self admired and appointed king of his domain aka the school. Meanwhile Henry falls in lust love with Valerie who is a queen emasculator, and thereupon ensues a tortuous affair which he is unable to wean himself of. I wanted to take Valerie and banish her from being anywhere near men forever.

I am going to admit to feeling somewhat exasperated at Henry as he accepts yet another emasculation from this woman, I wanted to take Henry by the shoulders, shake him and tell him to ‘grow some balls man!

Each time Valerie turned up again, I found myself sighing and thinking, no not again, ‘just say no, because you just know this is not going to be good’, but painfully he was eager for some more abuse from her, you just want it to stop, but at the same time Edward’s gives it immense humour. An astute observation of some relationships: you know its going to be bad but you can’t help yourself from repeating it hoping that this time it will be different, but of course it never is.

Then Henry a failure as an actor and a failure as a man, embarks on seeking his birth mother and finds a family with which he can call his own. This is the one good thing about his life, to be loved with the ability to have a relationship with his mother and uncle.

On the up side at home; he has a wonderfully sardonic wit which gives him the superiority in being able to deal with the mad headmaster much to the awe of the other cowering staff and pupils.

I just have to give you a little snippets of the part when the Visiting Examiner (VE) comes to the school to assess the drama students. Having just learnt that the school’s old horse, smelly dog, and boy who looks after them in the stables are all called Oscar, Henry continues to enlighten the VE further about the school’s animals.

HENRY: “…in fact, there’s another equally smelly dog who’d love to meet you; he’ll be with Matron somewhere.”

VE: “The School Matron is in charge of a dog?”

HENRY: “Of course. She’s besotted with that animal….She ’s also the school’s designated peacock keeper…”
“We have rats too,” I add, warming to my theme. “Usually dead though - in the wall behind the accounts office.” ….
“Mice too, but we don’t mind them because we need mice to feed the snakes.”

VE: “Snakes?” she crackles……

And on it continues in the same vein.

This book is so funny, but so achingly cringeworthy at the same time.

Who should read this book?
1. Any man who is unable to leave a bad relationship
2. Any woman who needs to see how ugly it can look when emasculating harmless men.
3. Any Headmaster with grandeurs above his level of standing.
4. Anyone else who loves an intelligently well written wit and a good laugh.

Who is Tim Edwards? I ask this because this book makes you want to know who the author is and hope that he there are more like this. I so want to read more from him.

BRITISH LOOK AT HUMILIATION IN MANY FORMS

The essence of “Lessons in Humiliation” becomes clear in the Preamble when the narrator, Henry Robson, is given the casting test of going down his front steps to a busy thoroughfare, dressed for work, and dropping his drawers. The failing actor is to simulate defecating, complete with visual and physical effects, and, after finishing up and waving to a passing vicar, continue on his way. He performs as requested but fails to get the job. Apparently something was lacking in his presentation.

The humiliations continue through the remainder of the book: Something is lacking in Robson’s performance, not only in his acting, but also in his life. It’s a farcical look at a man who meanders through his existence on wobbly shoes.

The author, Timothy Edward, is an unknown and
invisible person. I found nothing when I Googled him. Amazon has no information about him. Even my Kindle edition of the book contains no author’s biography. I’m assuming that he (or she) is a British writer but I don’t have to assume anything about the writing skills. They are excellent. The author is clever, witty, a talented grammarian, and very funny.

I’m a great admirer of British comedy. The late Benny Hill and today’s Rowan Atkinson are examples of
British comedians that explore universal human traits with deadpan and stoic demeanor. So it is with this book. There are quirky characters, none of which have endearing qualities. There is parody and innuendo throughout in the situations and dialogue. The entire theme, although maddening in its stereotypes, presents both amusement and pathos in much the same way as portrayed in staid British comedy.

Henry Robson’s continuing infatuation with the infuriating Valerie who can elevate his image to great heights then squash it into quivering insecurity with a single word is a common occurrence in the real world, affecting both men and women who fall into the humiliating snare. The author has very adroitly presented this situation with both a comedic and a dark essence.

I liked this book although many consider me to be a bit off. If that seems to echo your persona, I believe you will enjoy it also.

I purchased a similar book before but this is way better. I couldn't put it down once I started reading. If you are really interested in starting a vending business this is the way to go. It is very in depth down to the weight and average vending amount of candy vending. This book will either give you confidence to keep on your path with this great knowledge or go the other way. Overall, if you are just getting started this is a definite must have. You will not regret the purchase.
