My son in California has this book and I cooked out of it while visiting. I came home and bought myself one right away. I love the different flavors and the ease of making them. Recommend this book for any cook that loves to make soups.

Beautiful book with gourmet soup recipes

This is a beautiful book with a picture of the finished product for every soup recipe. Many of the recipes have 2 to 6 additional pictures showing you how to make the soup. This book is for more gourmet and time consuming versus basic soup recipes but it also contains classics such as chicken noodle and many varieties of vegetable. Soups are categorized by Chilled, Light and Refreshing, Hot and Spicy, Creamy Vegetable, Chunky Vegetable, Winter Warming, Legume, Pasta, Noodle, Tofu, Chicken and Duck, Meat, Fish, Shellfish, Egg and Cheese, One-Pot and Soups for Entertaining. There isn't an index in the front or for each section so you need to flip through to find the soup you want to choose. Good index by ingredients in the back though.

Bottom of the page for each recipe contains nutritional information including calories, protein, carbs, fat and saturated fat, cholesterol, calcium, fiber and sodium. No total time for the recipe is listed so you need to read through to determine prep and cooking/simmering time. Note that the book is published in the UK so some of the ingredients need to be translated to the US word.

Since my fiancee and I received this book a year ago for Christmas, it has revolutionized our cooking. We now find that we use up all the bowls in the cupboard before we even fill half of the dishwasher. It's a real problem! Seriously, though, the soups in this book are fantastic. So far we've made fifteen or twenty of them, and I think there was only one we didn't care for. Several of them have been among the best soups we've ever had. The book would be worth the price for the lamb and pumpkin soup alone. Just superb. I'm now buying copies to give for Christmas this year.

Good, but should be better

I originally wrote a review of this book that was somewhat negative. Now that I've had a chance to review the field of works available on this subject, I feel inclined to upgrade my review somewhat.

The work has some decided pluses and minuses. On the plus side, it is probably the most accurate description of spoken Tamil that you will find. This is more of an accolade than it may sound. It is very difficult to pin down what "proper" spoken Tamil consists of, but this book does a better job than anything else in describing Tamil as it is spoken in Chennai.

In fact, it does a bit too thorough a job. Tamil's phonetic system is not simple, and this book does not go out of its way to make it any easier. The new student might be excused at first blush from not believing that what he hears on the CD's is actually the same dialogues he reads in the book; the authors made a point of speaking at a fast clip, like normal Tamil, but it leaves little scope for the learner to get his arms around the pronunciation. There are sound files available online at various websites that are easier for the beginning learner to deal with than the ones designed for this book.

There are other drawbacks to the book that can't be disregarded. Some portions of the grammar are simply not described; the authors apparently don't care to explain what the Tamil infinitive form is and how it differs from the stem - the learner is left to figure that out for him/herself. The types of adjectival endings are not explained in sufficient detail. Worst of all, the vocabulary lists purport to indicate what chapter a word was introduced, and it is wrong in almost every occasion, and in fact a lot of words are used in the lessons that are never explained. This fact tends to pull the rug out for me on whatever virtues the book has.

Despite all this, it is the best bet in town if you want to learn some Tamil on your own. But it won't be easy.

Good book, if you know the language a little

This is probably not the ideal book if you have NEVER heard/attempted spoken tamil before. But, if you are familiar with another Indian/South Indian language and want to learn Tamil, this is a good book. There are several very realistic dialogues with English transations that are used as a teaching aid throughout the book. Personally, I have found the book extremely useful, but I have lived in Chennai for 4 years and I can understand most of it. Thanks to this book, I have been able to talk to my mother-in-law in near-fluent tamil in about 4 weeks. Another problem is there aren't too many other Tamil books out there, so by all means, give this a try. Overall, it is a very well written book.

an enormous challenge

There are so many challenges in studying Tamil that in a book of this size it is necessary to consider certain trade-offs. The spoken language differs considerably from the written, and it is a very difficult language to pin down to a phonetic system. So what we have here is a book that introduces the alphabet, but has little else to do with writing. Another challenge comes from the speed with which Tamilians usually speak their language; the authors have opted for authenticity, which means the speakers are talking very rapidly indeed, to a point where it is even hard to pick out individual words. One solution might be to buy this book along with Kausalya Hart's 'Tamil for Beginners' (audio should be available from Cal-Berkeley, and the author's recording is at a much easier pace to follow). Also, the Hart book teaches the alphabet completely at the beginning and it is used in all of the subsequent lessons.

Still, 'Colloquial Tamil' is a useful book to have, given the very few resources available for Tamil learners. The dialogues get more interesting as the work moves along, and with a lot of practice listening to the accompanying CDs (sold separately), they will become clearer. A language of instant gratification this is not.

Excellent fantasy!

I "stumbled" upon Michael Stackpole's fantasy works beginning with [Talion: Revenant] and was instantly captivated by his storytelling. So far, I've collected most of his fantasy novels and have to say that he maintains a consistent level of excellent writing in all of those works!
I eagerly awaited the publication of [DGW] and finished it over a weekend! The ending is a bit surprising, but I think that makes the novel all the more original. The character development and the maturation process for Tarrant Hawkins is very finely done.
I just finished the follow-up, [Fortress Draconis] last night and have to say that this is one series that I can't wait to read all the way through! And unlike some authors, Mr. Stackpole has already stated that this will be a trilogy ([DGW] is the prequel), so there is a light at the end of this tunnel.
In summary, I highly recommend this novel and all the other fantasy novels by this great author. Although I haven't ventured yet into his sci-fi works, I plan to do so soon and expect the same level of excellent writing!

Had to purchase this again because I gave my copy out. I would give just about anything to see this as a movie. This is 10x better than The Hobbit. This is for grownups. A book you will want to read over & over.

One of my favorite books.

This book is awesome. The first 20 pages or so are a little bit slow and kind of weird if you just took a glance at it. But don't be turned away. You'll soon realize that all the history information on masks and rituals means a great deal to the later story line.
Again, this book is awesome and anyone who likes fantasy books with magic and sword fighting will love it. I really like the way Stackpole describes magick and how it works.
Definitely pick this book up. Don't forget to get Fortress DRaconis, else you'll regret it when you finish this book.

A Bit Disappointing

This book has A LOT of poses but however the only annoyances I have (and sadly it's a BIG one hence why I gave the product only 3 stars), is that the majority of the character poses are FEMALE. Are females really that hard for people to draw? MALES are harder for me as there is so much detail they have in their bodies like in their muscles. Also, what the HELL is with showing the genitals of the females and not the males? Clearly this book was made by a male so the female is VERY defined as you can actually see the figure's v****! If you can show a female character's v**** then, why not show the man's private body part, his penis and testicles? I've noticed in a lot of art books concerning poses the majority of the poses are FEMALE it's AGGRAVATING! Most of us artists (female especially), already know how to do the female body pretty well, it's the MALE body that we have trouble with!

Also, the other reviewer before me talks about some of the poses being too small. That's not an issue for me as I'm accustomed to drawing really small. Some people may have an issue with this but I don't. Also, the book is smaller than a regular art book. Not pocket-sized, but close enough.

All in all, this book is pretty good with poses especially poses from different angles aside from the favoring one sex over the other when it comes to the majority of character poses, and some people might have issues with the picture sizes near the end, (but that's so you can BUY the other books in other series! Another thing to all you comic/manga drawers out there, there are NO MANGA DRAWINGS like the preview shows you so don't be fooled!

I tried to find this book at any library but I couldn't so I eventually gave in and bought it. Despite my slight grievances, I am glad I did finally buy it. It has a lot of interesting poses and the same poses from different angles. I know this book will definitely help me out with posing my characters and I think it will help others out there as well. The price is worth buying but, since it's a small book it should of been $5 instead of $15.
