About the Authors:
Casimer DeCusatis is a Distinguished Engineer for IBM Corporation, Poughkeepsie NY. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the Optical Society of America, an IBM Master Inventor, and has received various industry awards for his work on fiber optics. He has edited and authored many books, including the two volume Handbook of Fiber Optic Data Communications.

Carolyn J. Sher DeCusatis is a physicist and writer who has contributed to many technical books, including the Optical Engineer’s Desk Reference and the Handbook of Fiber Optic Data Communications.

About the Author
Dr. Casimer DeCusatis is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and technical executive based in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He currently serves as Chief Technology Officer for IBM Systems Networking Strategic Alliances, and has played a leading role in developing data center network and I/O solutions, including extended distance connectivity. He is an IBM Master Inventor with over 100 patents, and recipient of several industry awards, including the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, the Sigma Xi Walston Chubb Award for Innovation, the EDN Innovator of the Year Award, the Mensa Research Foundation Copper Black Award for Creative Achievement, the Penn State Outstanding Scholar Alumnus Award, and the IEEE/HKN Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer award (including a citation from the President of the United States and an American flag flown in his honor over the U.S. Capitol). He is co-author of more than 120 technical papers, book chapters, and encyclopedia articles, and editor of the Handbook of Fiber Optic Data Communication (now in its 4rd edition). He is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology and co-leader of the Academy study “Innovation Ecosystems”. Dr. DeCusatis received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, N.Y.) in 1988 and 1990, respectively, and the B.S. degree magna cum laude in the Engineering Science Honors Program from the Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) in 1986. A historical fiction, but really it’s an adventure novel with a religious conspiracy running right through it.

The 17th Century was a turning point for many things, most notably the slow demise of the Holy Roman Empire and the rise of France. What I didn’t realize was the international nature of the conflict, where a Turk might fight for Spain, and a Scot for Sweden. Long before the arrival of motor transport, people were traveling the world, seeking adventure.
That’s what this book is about – adventure. It’s set in the Thirty Years War, seen through the eyes of four siblings: three good, and one really nasty villain, an intriguing mix of psychopath, sociopath and lost boy, with a hint of OCD thrown in. The background is historically accurate in the main, although Bolan takes some liberties with when inventions actually took place.
I grew up in Germany where much of the Thirty Years War happened. When we learned about it in school, it was dull, just a series of names and dates. Bolan’s book is completely different – it’s full of rich characters who struggle to survive in those turbulent times. Most of the main characters are very believable, although I think the author is keeping something in reserve, especially with the heroine Isabella. She’s well-drawn, but doesn’t do much, which left me hoping for more in the rest of the series.
I really enjoyed this book, in fact I surprised myself that I enjoyed it so much. It’s set as historical fiction, but really it’s an adventure novel with a religious conspiracy running right through it. I can’t wait to see what happens next…

Great book for action/thriller/consipiracy/underdog/historical fiction lovers

I received a free review copy of this book from the author and in return agreed to give it an honest review. I expected to be underwhelmed, but came away extremely impressed and wanting to read the next installment.

It is in two genres (besides the main genre of historical fiction) that deserve their own names by now, though the names I'd give are way too long. Genre 1: world-wide conspiracy with deep historical roots, happening invisibly but under our noses and affecting the fates of millions (think *Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code*, A.G. Riddle's *The Atlantis Gene*, or the Indiana Jones series). Genre 2: the rebel underdog fighting with impossible odds against an evil empire with unimaginable power (think Star Wars, Brave Heart, Gladiator).

Why did I expect to be underwhelmed? This is a first novel from someone who did not spend his life as an aspiring writer. I read it because I know the author, he's a smart guy, and it was a free copy. I am a sucker for action/thriller/mystery & historical fiction, so I suppose I'm an ideal candidate for this kind of multi-genre action-filled book, but I'm also probably too well-educated and too old and skeptical to like most books written for this audience even when they're extremely well reviewed. So I figured I'd read it because I like bad fiction even when the content is mostly garbage, but I also figured I wouldn't love it.

But the book surprised me. It's smart, it covers a location meaningful to me (Europe from Ireland to the Czech Republic, where I now live) and an exciting period in history (the 30 years wars) that has received too little coverage in popular historical fiction. It has a great underdog story with strong relationships that build over the course of the novel and really connect you to the heroes and their small but growing team of rebels. And it also provides a great lesson in history, religion, and the history of science that makes you want to read more about the time while still conveying a sense of the time in the writing. It's a wonderful book covering original territory that has the potential to be the first volume of an epic thriller.

My one complaint is that the story ended too abruptly so that it didn't feel complete. While the book is part of a series, I like to have a sense of completion after each book or I feel cheated. I didn't feel that sense of completion with this book. But I guess the good news is there's a next book in the series that promises to carry the story onward. And the story in the first book is still long and full and compelling, so still highly worth the read in its own right.

A great novel for lovers of history, and action

In a war-ridden Europe, Willem, Leo, and Isabella exile themselves from their tyrannical brother, Reinald. They rely on each other and their growing group of mercenaries in their goal to depose Reinald, who has become part of a movement to bring about the Apocalypse. With the help of an Irishman, the siblings find that they must aim higher than their rightful inheritance. They must put an end to the work of the Four Horsemen for the sake of the world.

The Sons of Brabant is a wonderfully crafted novel. While I wasn't sure of it in the beginning, the writing and story quickly drew me into the 1600s. This is probably the best start to a series I've read in quite a while. The characters were all fully developed by the end, smaller plots were completed, but all this was done with the promise of more, yet I wasn't left frustrated by unanswered questions or dangling plot lines. The ending perfectly sets up the second novel, which I was gratefully told will arrive in the Fall of 2015. I'm also grateful to see a strong female character in Isabella. Of course there was some romantic mentions, but that wasn't what made her character. She's beautiful, but that's not what other characters remember of her. It's her passion, intelligence, and her kindness that sets her apart and makes her the true leader of the exiled siblings (which her brothers admit.) Bolan shows his deep understanding of European history with his descriptions of the wars and battles, along with the political climate. It's refreshing to read a novel where I am so immersed that I don't bother fact checking. For me, that's saying a lot. I fact check menus. There's a fantastical element to the novel which made that much easier. I loved the inclusion of so many cultures and seeing how they interacted.

Overall I think this is a great novel for anyone who enjoys action and history. This is one novel that makes you ponder the consequences of right and wrong, and who determines those sides of the coin.

About the Author

Paul Copan is a professor and the Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Marquette University.

William Lane Craig is research professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology in La Mirada, California. His Ph.D. in Philosophy is from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Another Homerun --- Excellent Essays that deal with Important Issues

This collection is wonderful, especially in combination with the previous collection Passionate Conviction. It really does provide excellent essays to rationally and reasonably defend the truth of Christianity.

The best thing about this book is that it deals with numerous contemporary issues and concerns. It is hard since the popularization of Dawkins and Erhman for one to simply jump to the gospel, without first having to sort out "delusional" issues or "mistranslations" or "corruptions."

This book provides some of the necessary tools. Now looking at the essays covered, one will realize that other issues that are important are missing, namely that of relativism or comparative religions. So it is not a complete guide, but if one picks up passionate conviction those issues are addressed.

Therefore one might want to see which issues are of most concern to you and thus pick volumes accordingly.

The minor let down, was getting the book and starting to read Craig's critique of dawkins only to find that it was about 3 pages (other authors give a more substantive analysis). Although it did address some issues, I wanted a lot more. Additionally, if one owns a huge collection of apologetics textbooks, one may ask is it worth it? For example Craig Evans has a chapter on Fabricating Jesus, but he has written a whole book on the issue. There are other instances of this (mostly with the Jesus of History section), in which I owned the book, in which the expert has written and from which the article may have been derived or adapted.

Moments like those made me wonder if I was getting my full money's worth (or if i own too many books !) , but in the end I was pleased as it was a great recap and so there is so much good material in a portable compact volume.

It is an excellent volume, especially recommended for those new to the issues and challenges of the New Athiests.

Answering the New Atheists

This collection of essays is not for the weak of mind, as there are plenty of places to go deep in the thinking realm of Christianity and a response to the New Atheists. As with any compilation of essays, there were good ones in this volume and others I just skimmed through--probably at least 4 or 5 did not grab my attention at all, and thus the 4-star rating. But the good ones make the book worthwhile reading. My favorites were ch. 1 (Dawkins' Delusion, Craig), ch. 10 (How Scholars Fabricate Jesus, Evans), and ch. 15 (Did God become a Jew? A Defense of the Incarnation). What I enjoy about compilation books like these is that the reader can pick up at any chapter and get something out of it. Again, it's a worthwhile pick, but not if you are opposed to books making you think deeply.

Great Collection

This is an excellent collection of essays defending the Christian faith and doctrines. Starting from William Lane Craig's knockout to Richard Dawkins (no wonder Dawkins is to afraid to debate Craig) and continuing with victory blows from an all-star cast of Christian thinkers. This isn't an end all debates collection but it's powerful nontheless. Some surprises here too, like Chapter 16 on the doctrine of Penal Substatution and Chapter 12 "Who did Jesus think he was?", which took an approach I didn't expect (defending Mark 8:29-30). Chapter 9, "The Resurrection of Jesus Time Line" by Gary Habermas is a very important essay for every Christian to read and ought to be taught in every church. Chapter 10 by Craig A. Evans covers some of the information he gives in his "Fabricating Jesus" book, which is worth reading on it's own.

I have added an additional star as I spoke with the author and found that they are revising the book as errors are noted. This is apparently an advantage of using a smaller publishing company. They are able to make revisions on the fly as copies are printed. I believe the ongoing effort to make corrections and improve the quality of the text deserves another star.

Original Review:

I am using this text in college-level courses. I will cautiously recommend its use with the following considerations.

First, this book is relatively ground-breaking and I agree with a previous reviewer that Doug Elrick can legitimately be considered a pioneer in this somewhat new and emerging scientific field, especially on the academic side. The book is a first of its kind and is an outstanding effort. I truly hope it sets a standard to be imitated by other authors and mainstream publishers. I strongly recommend it for subject matter, content, and the practical problems.

On the other hand, unfortunately, the text has many typos and even a few erroneous calculations. For example, it is not uncommon to find such substitutions, as 0x45 for what should be 0x4F. I am not sure if this is the result of an automated review process or what. Most of the typos are inconsequential and it has become “fun” for the students to find them before other classmates. Such games can be very motivational. However, there are a small number of typos (errors) in example calculations that can be extremely frustrating for the students, especially when they spend hours working on problems trying to get their answers to match the examples in the book. Many of the exercise files are either missing or incorrectly labeled in comparison to the text.

Furthermore, the answers to the practical exercises provided by the publisher run about 25% outright wrong. I am not sure how or why that disconnect could have happened. My strongest recommendation for any instructor who wants to use this book is to work out each and every practical exercise yourself and compare the answers to those provided by the publisher. It will save you a lot of embarrassment in front of your students, especially when they have derived the correct answer and your answer is wrong.

As an instructor in this field, I will likely develop my own manuals and practical exercises for future use. That way, I can control content and quality. I selected this text for a quick start-up on an undeveloped course with an extremely short timeline for implementation. Other than the numerous typos in the text and errors on the answer key, the Elrick text is a great model for how such a text should be designed and organized. I sincerely hope that there will be a second edition and that it will be more thoroughly reviewed before publication.

Congratulations to Doug Elrick for a relatively successful first effort.

It's a good book.

I read the storage and file system related chapters from Windows Internals 6 before reading this book, but besides that it is my first book on the topic and I had NO prior knowledge. I went through the material 2-3 times in order to really understand and it was well worth it. What you get is a deep insight into how your data is structured on your disk from a file system perspective. Really good step by step teaching approach that gets the important stuff across in an easy to understand manner.

The editing is really bad. Countless typos, some of which you have to be creative to decipher. There are some errors in calculations of the examples as well. I sent an email to the address mentioned in the book to get the course material, but I got no response (1 week ago). You don't really need it in the end, but...just saying.

All in all, a good book if you are willing to work and dedicated to understand.

Don't Even Bother

This book was absolutely terrible. I gave it one star because I couldn't go any lower and because the heroine was o.k. It is a rich man-poor girl Cinderelly kind of story. But it was awful. Blaze was the BIGGEST jerk throughout the whole book and even in the end he didn't show the slighest indication that he had changed. Chrissy was too stupid! The Big Misunderstanding was completely her fault because she was trying to spare the feelings of too many people instead of thinking about the consequences of her actions. Blaze had no good qualities at all. He treated the heroine like a servant, even after he married her. And Chrissy never found her back bone.
The book could have been good because it had a good premise. Instead it felt like we jumped into the middle of the story; it felt like there were pages of dialogue missing; and you NEVER, NOT ONCE found out what Blaze was thinking. It was all totally Chrissy's point of view. And the ending was totally rushed. Everything was wrapped up in about 5 paragraphs. This book was a big disappointment.

A Sort of Cinderella Story

If you like Cinderella stories in which fate throws together a hand some, rich , successful and famous man with a plain, struggling working girl and makes him fall for her, this is the book which satisfies you. It is good escapism for women who have not married Prince Charming.

I love love love this book.

I had some how missed Lynne Graham's books. Until I read this one. I love this book. I went out and read everything else she has ever written. It is so funny an sad. The heros Blaze & Cristy are so wonderful. He thinks he is a rock but he just melts for Cristy.
