About the Author
Dr. Tubbs is lead researcher in Pediatric Neurosurgery. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Clinical Anatomy, is author/editor of multiple books, and is a new editor for the 41st edition of Gray’s Anatomy.

Dr. Rizk is a neurosurgeon at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center with a clinical specialty in pediatric peripheral nerve surgery. He has multiple publications on the PNS and is active in basic science research regarding peripheral nerve regeneration.

Physician and anatomist for the Department of Ophthalmology at the Indiana University School of Medicine who has written extensively in the field of anatomy and on the peripheral nerves.

Chair and Professor in the Department of Anatomical Sciences at St. George’s University who has written extensively in the field of anatomy and on the peripheral nerves.

Dr. Robert Spinner is a neurosurgeon in Rochester, Minnesota. He is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic - Saint Marys Hospital. He received his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and has been in practice for 25 years. Poor Bloody Infantry

Flames of War
Having been a wargamer now for over 25 years the table top game Flames of War has taken me by surprise and outclasses all other games in the field. Of course it helps that I am also an armchair general with great interest in military history. The better you know the history the more fun the game is and the better you know the game the more sense military history becomes. For newcomers this book is not a complete game in itself, the game is played with minatures and you will need the core rulebook Flames of War - but if minature wargaming is your thing - then this is the best game I have played.

Monty's Meatgrinder
This is a campaign book set in the aftermath of Normandy and the focus is the series of battles around Caen, Monty's D-day objective that took over 30 days to capture for great losses on both sides. This is one of the Campaign books in the Normandy series and its main focus are the forces of the 3rd British Division, 3rd Canadian Division and the 21st Panzer Division. For the allied side this means this is a source book for infantry based armies PBI - Poor Bloody Infantry - that had a hard and unglamorous time and good as such. For the Germans we get a rather strange division since the 21st employed a large number of old French tanks converted to carry modern weaponary. I respect Battlefornt for devoting such effort to a very odd and unique division but don't see myself palying such an army anytime soon.

Over all a very good Campaign book as can be expected from Battlefront but not among my favorites.

Great book if you are interested in the German 21st Panzer or several British and Canadian units. Offers great organizational charts for making Tank Companies, Infantry or mechanized lists. Full color. Lots of great pictures and info for Flames of War.

The best single volume overview of Mesoamerica

Probably the best overview of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures in a single volume, written by one of the most prominent Maya archeologists. This edition included the information that became available with spectacular excavations at Copán, Calakmul and other Classic Maya sites, and is an indispensable book for anyone interested in understanding the worlds of ancient Mesoamerica.

Drawing on fanzines and free papers, record lyrics, interviews and diaries, Senseless Acts of Beauty gives a vivid, insider account of countercultures, networks and movements that until now have remained largely unrecorded. At the same time, George McKay analyzes their effects, and gives his own answers to the questions they pose: what are their politics, their aspirations, their consequences? Though it will spur you to do further research on the internet, this is a fairly lightweight overview of some fascinating scenes

I have developed a consuming interest in the 1960s London counterculture and have read a great many books on the subject by participants in the scene, nearly all of which claim the counterculture dried up by 1971 or so. In SENSELESS ACTS OF BEAUTY: Cultures of Resistance since the Sixties, George McKay claims that the counterculture has persisted in the decades since, through the 1970s, the dismal Thatcher era and the early 1990s. McKay, born in 1960, squatted houses, followed punk and was an anarchist activist as a young man, which makes him especially qualified to describe more recent UK cultures of resistance.

McKay focuses on five alternative cultures which are to some degree interrelated: 1) the free festivals of the 1970s and early 1980s (cultimating in police brutality at the last Stonehenge Festival), 2) New Age travellers i.e. people living out of their vans and moving all over Britain, often after festivals, 3) the punk/DIY era of the late 1970s and early 1980s, 4) the rave scene, techno music and ecstasy as resistance or escape, 5) eco-warrior protestors. It should be noted that the chapter on punk is entirely concerned with the anarchist band Crass; unlike the Sex Pistols, whose resistance was mainly marketing gimmick encouraged by their management, Crass was truly committed to changing the world.

On nearly every page there is a mention of some new personality or event that will send you off trawling Wikipedia for hours, so I'm happy I purchased this book Still, I was disappointed by many aspects of it. 185 pages, many of which contain photos, is not enough space to explore over two decades of activity. Some books on the 1960s counterculture run to more than double the page count, and the heyday of that movement was only about five or six years.

Furthermore, in spite of McKay's insistence that the counterculture never died, he doesn't conclusively show any continuity between the Sixties and the later cultures of resistance. The book opens with the free festivals scene in 1973, two years after books on the 1960s say it was all over. What happened in those two years. Penny Rimbaud of Crass had in fact been active in 1960s alternative cultures, but McKay doesn't mention any of his activities that span both the Sixties and Seventies.

Misleading classification

The search subjects for this book bill it as "secondary" and "high school" language arts. After receiving the book, I can see that it is very much for elementary level teachers. All the pictures, examples, and suggested resources are elementary level.

The book does look like an excellent resource for elementary teachers.

I like it because it was scary. It had a lot of action. He was brave and capable. I like when the phantoms show up. Find out how to go into the fog.

Amazing Book!

Justin Martinez and Caitlin have a big adventure heading for them. On night in Tampa Bay, Florida, there was a huge storm that passed through. In its path was a thick dark fog. The next day, JUstin and Caitlin were playing in it. Every minute the fog was getting darker and thicker. As it was getting darker and thicker, the kids startedto see thingd, weird things. It only took a few minutes for them to become shark bait. A the day went by, Caitlen was nowhere to be found. Along the way, Justin meets a few fog people. Some nice and some evil like and old fog man. He told them If they don'f find their way out of the fog soon, they wll stay in the fog forever.
This book was very good. I could never put it down. It was very scary and mysterious. I felt like i was with Justin and Caitlin.

About the Author

MASATOSHI NAKAYAMA carried on the tradition of his teacher, Gichin Funakoshi, the Father of Modern Karate. Long professor and director of physical education at Takushoku University, his alma mater (1937), he was chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association from 1955 until his death in 1987, A ninth degree black belt and a familiar face at tournaments, he was among the first to send instructors overseas and to encourage the development of karate as a sport along scientific lines.

PREFACE

This book is not intended to reveal any secrets of karate, because there are no mysteries involved in the study of this martial art. The purpose of this publication is to provide a textbook for the karate student based on the techniques I have acquired during my more than thirty-year study and teaching of the art. Fundamental techniques and movements have been thoroughly analyzed, categorized, and arranged systematically to serve as a complete guide.

My teacher, Funakoshi Gichin, changed the concept of karate-jitsu (literally, "Chinese hand techniques") to karate-do (literally, "empty-hand ways") in 1935, and published the Karate-do Kyohan. This outstanding book was primarily intended as a character-building source book, but it also explains the spiritual contents of karate, classifies the various techniques, and provides an evaluation of karate as a course of physical education. Feeling the need for a modern and complete manual, I have taken the techniques mentioned in my teacher's book and have spent ten years compiling a new text of fundamental techniques based on my teaching experience at the Japan Karate Association.

Another factor which prompted me to publish this book was the growing popularity of karate as a sport. This development is, of course, welcome, but training merely to win a match can lead to the deterioration of this dynamic and powerful art. The need to build true proficiency on a solid foundation, I feel, is more important than ever. I feel that karate should be viewed from a broad standpoint. From the point of its development as a modern martial art and from the physical education aspect also, the ultimate goal of karate should be the attainment of a developed moral character built through hard and diligent training.

Systematic and scientific training is also essential. Faulty training methods can result in acquiring bad habits or even in physical injury. However, the techniques which took years to perfect in the past can be mastered in half the time with a good training manual. Hard training is necessary to obtain proficiency, but thoughtless, unsystematic training will do more harm than good.

My experience in teaching students from Western countries after the war has also provided me with many valuable hints, such as the habit of seeking answers to questions from the fields of physiology and body kinetics. In this book I have tried to explain the execution of techniques based on these principles.

I realize that karate is difficult to master without a good instructor to teach the fine points. The photographs in this book provide step-by-step instructions to each technique and should be an adequate guide to help the student learn good karate. Common faults are also shown as a guide to what should not be done....

A must Have !

This book includes detailed description of almost every Shotokan Hand and Foot techniques. The techniques are executed by Nakayama Sensei himself and by such great assistant as Kanazawa Sensei, Enoeda Sensei, Ochi Sensei ... So to be short, the very best JKA Karate specialists demonstrate all the techniques of Shotokan Karate-Do with great detail and explanations. One point : there's NO katas in this book, but what the helle, there arae a lot of other books dealing with them specifically (have a look at the Best Karate Series also by Nakayama Sensei). Get this book and you won't regret it, for the beginner, the advanaced student and also the instructor.

A Great Training Resource For Any/All Karate Students

This is an excellent reference material for anyone who studies karate.
It covers kicking, punching, striking, blocking, countering moves, and even some training methods. Every page is full of pictures which show the technique "frame by frame." Each technique is fully documented and tips and training methods are provided.
As always, this book is not a "Learn Karate in Ten Easy Steps," nor does it contain unrealistic self-defense techniques (i.e. "What to do if you're attacked in a bathroom from behind by a female wearing a dress while the moon is full.") It is simply an extremely in-depth yet easy to understand guide to the basic moves of karate.
The book is flexible, in that it does not pertain to one style of karate in particular, and is helpful to a student of any rank. I don't study Shotokan, and some of the names were different than the ones I use (Japanese names are given also), but I could easily identify the moves by the pictures.
Although we call them "basics", basics often require the most practice and proper technique. I highly recommend this book to any martial artist who wants to master the fundamentals of karate.

Good for almost anyone

This book is an odd one. It doesn't have much on the spiritual aspects of karate, which some readers find unhealthy. It doesn't have any kata, although some practice steps are shown in the back in a way that suggests kata. Some readers find this lack of kata to be a minus. Other reviewers find the book, well, boring. I have books on my shelf by Hee Il Cho, Bruce Lee, Joe Lewis, etc and they are certainly more photogenic than the author of Dynamic Karate. However...I keep coming back again and again to this book because it is a gold mine of traditional karate. Just about every technique, move, stance, etc you can imagine is somewhere in this book. It has the air of authority because of the author and who trained him. In these pages live and breathe, if you stare at the pictures long enough, the Real Thing. The Real Thing is the karate that was distilled for generations into what Funakoshi taught. I find myself studying the pictures because I know that the techniques portrayed cannot be done any better than by Nakayama. The real central core of Japanese karate is in these pictures and in these pages. I believe that this book is better for people that have studied for awhile rather than for the novice. There are better books for novices than this tome. However, if you want to really see a master, and see what that master believed was THE way to do almost any of your favorite techniques, then get this book.
