Superb

San Francisco to Boston, England to the Balkans, Turkey to Afghanistan, India, China and Japan: Stevens boldly cycled where no bicycler had gone before!
On the recommendation of a friend, I've been looking for this book for years. So I was delighted to learn that it had just been republished for the first time since 1902. Yes, 1902: Stevens started his trip in 1884. This intrepid wheelman (note: "wheel" is singular because Stevens' cycle was so dominated by the 50 inch front wheel he would often just refer to it as his "wheel") recorded his adventures and thoughts about the people and lands he visited during 13,500 miles of cycling.
As you might expect from a bicycle journalist, Stevens carefully describes the riding quality of most of the roads and trails he followed, comments on his many headers, and joked about the amount of food he could eat at the end of a long day pedaling a 41 pound bicycle. But the book is far more than a cycling story, it is a glimpse into a world that is long-gone yet still relevant. He saw the hostility between different ethnic groups in the Balkans, he visited Kurdish nomads in what is now northern Iraq, commented on how the mullahs were preventing Iran from modernizing, etc. A man of his times, some of his words (e.g., not particularly flattering portraits of the Native Americans that he met) would definitely not be considered politically correct 110 years after he wrote them. But all in all, it was a delightful read.

Back in print at last!

Truly a classic traveler's tale, one that I'd been tempted to pay $100+ for a used copy of last year. This is an excellent reprint of the original, with all its illustrations, plus some of Stevens's other writings on his trip, with a well-footnoted introduction.

Quite a feat!

It's amazing to think that Stevens was able to complete such a journey over 100 years ago on such a beastly bike. With no gears and bad roads, it seems he had to walk (or trundle) his bike as much as he rode it. It is especially interesting to see just how different some parts of the world are now, and yet just how little other parts of the word have changed since his journey. More than a travel book or bicycle adventure, the book is an interesting time capsule from long ago that is a pleasure to read!

About the Author
Robert Aitken's introduction to Zen came in a Japanese prison camp during World War II, after he was captured as a civilian in Guam. R. H. Blyth, author of Zen in English Literature, was imprisoned in the same camp, and in this unlikely setting Aitken began the first of several important apprenticeships. After the war Aitken returned often to Japan to study. He became friends with D. T. Suzuki, and studied with Nagakawa Soen Roshi and Yasutani Hakuun Roshi. In 1959 Robert Aitken and his wife, Anne, established a Zen organization, the Diamond Sangha, which has two zos in Hawaii. Aitken was given the title "Roshi" and authorized to teach by Yamada Koun Roshi, his current teacher, in 1974. He continues to teach and study Zen in Hawaii, where he has lived since the age of five.

As a Zen practitioner preparing for Jukai I found Aitken-roshi's THE MIND OF CLOVER to be possibly the best book I have read to date on the Ten Grave Precepts.

These Precepts (not to kill, lie, steal, self-aggrandize, defame others, misuse sex, misuse intoxicants, become wrongfully angered, to be generous, and to honor awareness, learning and community) are very similar to the Judeo-Christian Commandments in form. Aitken-roshi shows the reader however that the precepts are not simply ordinances imposed from outside but the very building blocks of personality and social interaction. He illustrates well how the precepts can and must be interpreted not blindly but with full cognizance of circumstance and consequence, both on a personal level and on a global level.

THE MIND OF CLOVER takes what could be a very fuzzy and indeterminate subject and presents it with elegant simplicity. The book has been described quite correctly as a sonata, with each successive chapter building on the ones before it to reach a grand conclusion.

One may disagree with certain of Aitken-roshi's personal observations---at times, his social politics seem reflexively trapped in 1960s amber---but there is no question that THE MIND OF CLOVER transmutes the practice of Zen from "simply sitting" in zazen to an active philosophy of life, allowing the adherent to take the calm, the awareness, and the wisdom found on the zafu and translate it into a way of daily living based on compassion and intimacy with all things.

This book is excellently read in conjunction with Tenshin Reb Anderson's BEING UPRIGHT, a rather more remotely philosophical treatment of the Precepts on a less mundane, more spiritual level.

I read it often, to say the least

It seems many people don't "connect" with this book. For myself, I find it more than inspiring. I have gone through many copies. I give it away regularly. I've lost one in a stream. Whenever I am feeling out of touch with my practice or my life, I read it. Or I read it when I'm feeling strong. Yes, I read it often.

Aitken Roshi's teachings resonate deeply for me. Who knows why?

This is the first book I read about Zen ethics and for me, it is the best. I find Aitken's writing to be clear, concise and beautiful. He was humble about areas in which he had doubt or un-knowing.

I think is important to correct the mistaken notion that Zen is without an ethical base. Our culture has absorbed this idea with silly expressions like "that's so Zen" or mistaking Zen for nihilism (or vice versa).

Please give this book a try.

About the Author
James L. Gibb is an Australian educator, novelist and health researcher with a particular focus on food-related diseases. A university graduate with a diploma of education, Gibb became interested in the relationship between nutrition and health when a family member was diagnosed with a chronic disease. He spent many years investigating natural alternatives to the powerful drugs prescribed for this condition, whose side effects can be damaging and debilitating. Over time he accumulated a wealth of information, which culminated in the writing of this book. 'Medical science has made enormous leaps in the 21st century,' writes Gibb, 'and without it, we would all be worse off. Dedicated medical researchers and doctors have improved our quality of life far beyond the standards available to preceding generations. That said, it is sometimes the afflicted themselves, or those closest to them, who are motivated to persevere just that little bit more keenly in pursuit of answers. Often, people with a personal investment in a health problem will stop at nothing to find a solution, seeking far and wide, never giving up. 'One example is the relentless quest of Augusto and Michaela Odone to find a treatment for their son Lorenzo's adrenoleukodystrophy, in the face of skepticism from health professionals. Their experience was later dramatized in the movie 'Lorenzo's Oil'. 'Another example is provided by Elaine Gottschall, whose daughter was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis. Medications failed to improve the child's condition, and most doctors dismissed the idea that diet could be in any way associated with this digestive disease. It was a maverick doctor who thought 'outside the box' who finally led Ms Gottschall to a treatment for her daughter. When he died, to preserve his knowledge she wrote a book called 'Breaking the Vicious Cycle', which has been translated into several languages, and is published worldwide.' 'My own experience with a suffering child motivated me to search for answers even in the most unlikely places, which conventional medicine may overlook. Accepted medical opinion is far from infallible, as has been demonstrated from time to time, notably when Dr Barry Marshall swallowed Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria to test the theory that they were a cause of peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. The H. pylori theory was ridiculed by scientists and doctors of the 'establishment', who did not believe any bacteria could live in the acidic environment of the stomach. Marshall has been quoted as saying in 1998 that "(e)veryone was against me, but I knew I was right." 'Sometimes it takes an outsider, unblinkered by conventional training, to perceive a truth. ( After all, it was a humble clerk in the Swiss Patents Office who became the father of modern physics.) I have tried Chinese med but was getting worse. At one point i was on mold free

This book saved my life. For last 5 years i was suffering from allergies. Doctors put my on prednison and told me that i will be on it for rest of my life. I couldn't sleep, i couldn't laugh, i was coughing so badly people around me were scared that i have TB At one point i got in hospital and almost died from allergies. All tests for food allergies were negative. I was told that i have ABPA, i was told that i have allergies to mold, to grass, trees ... you name it but not food. i even moved from east coast to west close to ocean, hopping that being in clean and less humid place will help. Nothing was helping.
I asked my doctors ( i have changed at list 5 of them) why do i get sinus congestion when i drink alcohol nobody could answer. Another doctor put me on xolair injections for 6 month, which cost me $8000k, didn't work.,doctor told me i have to be on it for one year in order med to work. I have two kids and i told my husband that being on prednison for rest of my life is not an option and i constantly was looking for nontraditional ways to def-fit my sever allergies. I have tried Chinese med but was getting worse. At one point i was on mold free, sugar free diet didn't help, no wonder it is based on protein no carb diet. Then i found this book on amazon ( i bough about 10 different books before) and everything made sense. I have been on histamine free diet for two month, i was lowering my prednison very slowly and as of today i am of it. I don't cough, i do get sinus some time but i use peppermint oil around my nostrils and use homeopathic Similasan, nasal allergy relif and it helps me a lot. I want to scream so everyone will hear me that there is way to cure for almost everything you just need not to give up and keep trying. There is no words to describe my thanks to James L. Gibb.

Desperately looking for an answer to my health problems I stumbled across this book. I was willing to try anything so I started the diet and the relief was almost immediate, I kid you not. I bless the day I found these words of wisdom, which stopped the pain.

Well-researched, informative and excellent.

I admit I was sceptical when I first saw this book, but after reading it and trying the diet I cannot recommend it highly enough. The author explains histamine tolerance in depth, referring to a long list of published medical studies to back up the explanation. It would seem incredible that histamine intolerance could be responsible for so many apparently unrelated health problems, but it turns out to be true. In my case, following this diet fixed some inexplicable, sporadic but very distressing health problems to which the doctors had no answers, and which had plagued me for a long time. Recommended reading for anyone who suffers from anything from digestive problems, to joint pain, to allergies, skin rashes and more.

Dillinger-Jack Higgins

I found this gem in my local library. Never gone wrong with a Higgins yet. By the way, this is one of three titles written under the name Harry Patterson ( aka Jack Higgins- in case you look for it).

What could've happened to the romantic figure of Dillinger, the robin hood of the 30's...

Filled with adventure! Apaches, bandits, oppressed local populace, corrupt police, bank robbery, evil villain, daring feats and of course a beautiful woman!

I especially liked the fact that the old-fashioned and supposedly outdated concept of honor is brought into play. Throw in a tough situation, the rescue of a little girl, and the real good guys show themselves, get together and do what's right and the bad guys well...they just keep on getting crazier!

This is a wonderful adventure. If you haven't read it I reccommend this book. Especially to Higgins fans, you probobly haven't thought of this one!

Good Adventure Yarn

This is one of three books that Jack Higgins published under his real name Harry Patterson. Although based on John Dillinger the book is a work of fiction. After robbing a bank, John Dillinger flees to Mexico where he is essentially forced to work for the owner of a mining operation. Of course, Dillinger is not one to be forced into working for anyone and plans his escape - but other events overtake him. The story has some good twists and turns and plenty of action.

What doesn't give this book a full 5 out of 5 is the fact that he made John Dillinger seem like a respectful pretty-boy. By also having him speak fluent Spanish in the book just seems ridiculous to me. Fun read nonetheless.
