The optimal approach to design, build, operate, and maintain buildings
With this strategic guide to building information modeling (BIM), you’ll learn how to implement this new technology as part of a comprehensive systems approach to the design, construction, management, operation, maintenance, and use of buildings. The authors, among the leading experts and pioneers in BIM, show you how BIM supports more streamlined, integrated, and efficient business processes throughout the life cycle of buildings, from their initial conception through their eventual retirement or reuse. The result is better quality buildings, lower construction and operating costs, shorter project turnaround times, and a higher quality of building information to support better business decisions. Moreover, they set forth a plan for incorporating BIM into every organization’s existing workflows, enabling you to take full advantage of all the benefits that BIM offers.
Everything you need to implement a BIM approach is set forth in detail, including:
- The business case for BIM, demonstrating how it can improve collaboration, facilitate better design and construction, optimize workflow, and help reduce risk
- Guidance for meeting the challenges of BIM such as an entrenched business culture, the proliferation of BIM tools, and the uneven rates of BIM adoption
- The “big picture” view showing how your organization can work with business partners and fit into the building life cycle in a BIM-enabled industry
Throughout the book, sample documents and figures help you better understand the principles of BIM and how it works in practice. In addition, first-hand accounts show you exactly how adopters of BIM have gained a competitive edge.
Architects, engineers, constructors, building owners, and facility managers can turn to this book to realize the full potential of BIM and radically improve the way buildings are designed, built, operated, and maintained.

Thought Provoking
By G. Jackson
Well written and well structured. Helps you analyze where you are at and what you want to get out of moving to a BIM platform. No product pitches just good solid information from a business point of view.

A timely, penetrating 360-degree view of the revolutionary world of BIM
By Randall S. Deutsch
Building Information Modeling: A Strategic Implementation Guide by industry experts Dana K. Smith and Michael Tardif is a timely, 360-degree view of the revolutionary world of BIM and how it impacts those involved in this building industry technology and the work processes it supports. At turns wide-angled overview and deeply penetrating in terms of detail, the book clearly and thoroughly describes, explains and justifies the implementation of this technology as part of a much larger system, involving the earliest design stages through that of building operations. More than just a step-by-step "how-to" guide, the book will serve those in the design professions and building industry as a much needed what-to and why-to BIM implementation guide. Clearly organized, this highly systematic and strategic guide helps place the latest building industry virtual construction technology into context, covers both issues and opportunities for those doing the implementing, and addresses likely future developments for BIM and the collaborative process it enables. One of the book's best qualities is that, in discussing a subject, the authors don't just repeat information that can be found elsewhere, but to the delight of this reader always advance the subject - thus adding value to the discussion, and when appropriate are not afraid to take a stand. Everyone who reads this book will benefit from the wisdom, experience and expertise of its authors - every field should be as fortunate to have authors such as Smith and Tardif to write on their behalf. This highly readable book - along with BIM Handbook: A Guide to Building Information Modeling for Owners, Managers, Designers, Engineers and Contractors by Chuck Eastman et al - should serve readers from the professions and industry well as they move forward into the foreseeable future.

Building Information Modeling: A Strategic Implementation Guide
By Michael MacVittie
This book was one of those rare technical books I found difficult to put down, being well written and informative. By necessity, its presentation remains transitional during this relatively unsettled stage in the process of shifting from CAD to BIM. The book does not attempt to offer all the answers. What it accomplishes more impressively is that it points out such considerations as 'Business Process Reform' and 'BIM-Based Enterprise Workflow' to encourage organizations to analyze and consider their own strategies and workflows as they adopt BIM. Parallels to other industries are mentioned to lend insight to our own. Business and contractual relationships, evolving roles and responsibilities and much more are all discussed in a cogent manner. Software tools are identified. Even the continuum of 'data, information, knowledge and wisdom' added nicely to the dialogue. Enough mention is made of ongoing activities related to BIM to remind one of the considerable effort underway to make BIM truly effective. However, one can also conclude the efforts are at best barely organized, if organized at all - not the fault of the authors for sure.
The book offers an excellent springboard to move forward intelligently and determine how to thread together what is pertinent to best utilize BIM in practice.
