Philo: Allegory, Instruction and Apology

The exegetical skill and divine wisdom of the great Philo (ca 15 BC-50 AD) is here exemplified in five treatises that deal with the stories in Genesis from Adam/Eve's being banished from Eden down to the birth of the race of Giants prior to the Flood. The method is, of course, allegorical, which in Philo's more Greek aspect (the Judaic use of allegory was also considerable by its own right, as shown below) is mainly derived from the Homeric tradition of interpreting the passionate characters in the epics in a more philosophically acceptable way; and it is typically bolstered with Stoic and Platonic concepts in ethics and cosmology. The unrestrained freedom Philo exercises in his interpretation of the Torah, contraposed with the literalism of the Sadducees, does not necessarily abandon Judaic tradition, as it is rooted in the Pesharist technique used by the Dead Sea community (ca 250 BC-70 AD). Also, Philo's method influenced and anticipated the Rabbinic Midrash technique which was in vogue during the time of Paul and figures prominently in his epistles; and shorlty thereafter, following the destruction of the Temple (ca 70 AD), it became the general method for interpreting the Torah in rabbinic circles.

Philo is often unjustly criticized or unappreciated for his allegorical extravagence by modern exegetes. However, the modern animus for allegoresis is unfounded and is purely moderno-centric. His own contemporary prestige and his legacy testify for itself on the validity and usefulness of his method. Philo positively changed the trajectory for exegesis forever in Judeo-Christian circles, e.g. his direct or indirect influence on the NT writers and on Pharisaic/Rabbinic Judaisim and all subsequent Christian theology--thinkers like Ambrose and Augustine, and Basil and the two Gregory's come to mind in a short list. Philo is also the most eminent figure in the era known as Middle Platonism, whose ideas formed intellects such as Numenius of Apamea, Plotinus, Clement and Origen. The colossal specter of Philo looms large over a very broad scope of discipline within the sphere of philosophy and religion in the East and West, thus his legitmacy speaks for itself and laughs at his critics.

Illuminating

This is more of a handbook for the masses. Have you been abducted? Let's see. The book is meant to explain what she has found in her research about the abduction phenomenon as well as how others have managed the fear, awe and surprises that accompany it. She includes a workbook that allows the "Experiencer" to outline their out of the ordinary experiences and focus in on their lives. These could be signs of having experienced contact from other worldly phenomenon. Although she does a good job of staying neutral, her research from thousands of regressions leads her to believe that contact is benign and can be illuminating for some. Whether you agree is up to you. The book is written from a clinical perspective, although experiences are included for emphasis and explanations are present. Consequently, it's easier to cross reference other research in other fields. There is a good reference in the back. Although she addresses adult experiences, her focus seems to lie in extraordinary children around the globe who show signs of unusual abilities. It was an excellent book for me because it is broken down into specific areas that address each aspect of the reported phenomenon.

Important book for parents, educators, counsellors... We just don't know it all.

Fascinating book that explains so much. I was initially annoyed by the crammed typeface and narrow margins, but very quickly the amazing content had me put that aside. Reading this book has greatly increased my understanding of what is happening to humanity today, and led me on to some further illuminating video's by Mary Rodwell. A very important read for those who claim to have an open mind, waste of time for those who are blinkered by fear.

A very different drawing book

[[VIDEOID:mo3GGHHIDG4J7I5]]This book takes a rather academic approach to teach drawing. By academic, I mean lots of text and instructions with not much visuals.

While the instructions are clear and easy to follow, the lessons would be more fun and impactful with more illustrated examples.

Say for example, there's a section where it talks about values and the different effects that result. It's difficult to feel the effect when you're just reading about them and can't see them, although I must say that there are exercises in the book where you practice creating those values. Half the book are instructions with blank space for you to draw on so I guess you'll have lots of practice.

By the way, the most important pages in the book are pages 10 and 11 on drawing what you see by measuring and judging the relationship between spaces and points. Many of the later lessons use the techniques taught in those two pages.

Personally for me, I prefer a book on drawing instructions with lots of drawing, such as Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing, or even Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards which has lots of text too. I guess I'm not particularly inspired by this book because it does not show what you can achieve after going through the lessons -- there aren't a lot of visual examples as I've mentioned.

Ignore your fears and just DRAW!

I am still working my way through this book, but I like it. At first I was a bit nervous to start drawing in the book, but then I realized that that is what it's for! So I threw out my fear and started drawing. My first drawing was even recognizable to someone else without prompting (a tornado - well, two tornados - although he thought my tree in the whirlwind was a house, but whatever, that's why I'm reading this book, right?)

I like that it gives you both the reasons for doing something as well as the instructions. So you're also learning how to appreciate art/drawing as you're learning how to do it.

I wish the book had actually been spiral bound, rather than glue/perfect binding, so that it would be easier to use it as a sketchbook.

Practical information for those of us with no art background

This book explains art concepts like open and closed compositions, line and form, perspective, etc. in an interesting way that helps me understand how to use these concepts to improve my drawing. As each concept is explained, there is opportunity for practice right in the book. I do not understand the review that said there is a lot of text. The vast majority of the pages are mostly blank with instructions about how to use the concept being studied. So, don't let the idea that this book is wordy or long winded turn you off. In my opinion, it is quite the opposite.

I believe that I will be better (not necessarily good) at drawing when I complete the book. Furthermore, the practice is fun! So, for those of you who, like me, have purchased "beginning drawing" books in the past and found them to be over your head by chapter 3, this is a good book for you to try! You can't help but learn, and you'll have a good time doing it!

A Wonderful for a Young Mind

This book is a very simple idea, but so very creative and fun. It's a great outlet for kids to express their creativity—even ones who may be shy about it as it gives enough direction to spark the imagination, but makes many of the projects super interesting, silly, and/or fun. The directions are in a simple in a non-intrusive font—leaving space for the drawings. The paper is nice, smooth, and thick. Every other page is split diagonally (two exercises for two smaller drawings) and the opposing pages are full-sized (for bigger drawings in more detail). This is nice, because a young person can choose to do smaller drawings/sketches if they are in a hurry or take their time on a small masterpiece.

*I* was really tempted to keep it for me (I'm an artist), but I bought it for my homeschooled 3rd grader. The plan was to let her use it as an art journal for school next year, but when she saw it she begged to draw in it and immediately produced 3 enthusiastic unique and cool drawings. I expect 639 more to come quickly. We may not be using it for school next year after all (I can see my kiddo easily filling it up over the summer), but I'm so glad we found it. I will be purchasing other versions soon—including one for me.

Shari Y. Manning, PhD, is a clinician in private practice and the former President/CEO of Behavioral Tech and Behavioral Tech Research, the organizations founded by Marsha M. Linehan to provide training in DBT. Dr. Manning has focused on the treatment of people with BPD since 1993. She lives in Columbia, South Carolina.

Good advice ... hard to do.

If you are a trained therapist, the basic tactic in this book may work easier for you. It takes a lot of practice and patience to use the tools and advice given. The gist I get from it is to take the emotion from your response to the BPD out of the equation and also offer your understanding in a confirming statement. They give a few examples of the types of thing's they mean, and what is and isn't a confirming statement. This does help keep interactions and communication's from escalating to high intensity, in many cases, but it is very hard to do when the boyfriend I love is either emotionally very high or very low and he is trying to get an emotional response from me. I have been able to use this advice over the last 3 months and it has helped. We've been able to have less heated fights and get to more understanding of each other, I feel. The more calm and stable I remain, the more he remains so too ... but I have to contain myself first and always. I have to rethink and reword most of the immediate thing's I'd like to say to him, which helps him from not going off the deep end, but I feel he does not get the seriousness of the situation at times. Also giving a confirming statement as to validating him, I feel as an addict that he is, makes it seem that I am condoning his actions or words, so he continues to do destructive behaviors. Maybe I'm not doing it quiet right or I'm expecting to much.
Over all the book is helpful, and there are no quick solutions ... it's all work, hard work when loving a BPD.

Eye-Opening

Ok, so I have only read 1/3 of this book so far, and I will come back and write another review after finishing, but if you love someone who has BPD then you definitely need to read this. My husband has been incorrectly diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, adhd, severe depression, etc. However the 20+ pills he takes everyday have never seemed to help or they just comatose him. We have been together ten exhausting years, with many moments of extreme behavior and many moments of the wonderful person he can be. I have often thought that not only was he crazy, but also mean, manipulative, and a free loader b/c he has never been able to hold down a stable job. I've often accused him of wanting to be with me so I could take care of him financially. After reading the short amount of this book that I have, so many things make perfect sense. It has been very eye opening and is a must read for anyone who has a loved one with borderline personality disorder. At the very least it will help you to realize your loved one does love you but has not developed the necessary skills to be a functioning member of society (to various degrees). It will also allow you to change your reaction to their actions, which can help them change. This book is already such a blessing to me, and I am so thankful that Dr. Manning has taken the time to educate those of us who just happen to love someone with this disorder.

I have also read "Stop Walking On Eggshells". I like the approach of this book much better. Eggshells seems confrontational, but the approach of this book is trying to foster an understanding and helping the person you love.

on of the best books on judicial review

This is an excellent book for scholars interested in judicial review. Bobbitt breaks down the typology of constitutional interpretation into six categories.

It is not written in a manner that is accessible for the casual reader, but if you are interested in how constitutional interpretation is approached from different philosophies - what separates a Justice Frankfurter from a Justice Black, or a Scalia from Stevens -- then I would highly reccomend this book.

An Interesting Approach

This book provides a well written explanation to the logic of various constitutional arguments. The inclusion of arguments favored by Justices as well as specific situations in which they were relevant helps establish the relevant context clearly and effectively.

While the strict empiricist may finish reading disappointed, those looking for insight into the approach of judges would be well served to give this a look.
